Fortnite chests refill in Treasure Hunters Battle Royale and Zero Build, allowing you to reopen a chest later in the same match. Epic confirmed the change in the November 1, 2026 update notes. A chest you have already looted is no longer necessarily finished for the round.
It’s useful if you’re gathering weapons and supplies, but it also raises a question for players chasing Pirate Shop Access: can you return to the same chest for another chance at the rare prize? Here’s what the refill feature actually changes and what still needs an in-game test.
How Fortnite chests refill in Treasure Hunters
Open a chest as you normally would, take the loot and continue playing. After time has passed, you can revisit that same spot and check whether the chest is available again. Epic’s description confirms that chests replenish over time. It does not promise that they reopen immediately or give a countdown.
Because Fortnite chests refill gradually, don’t stand beside an empty chest waiting for a guaranteed refresh. Search the next buildings, collect your supplies and keep moving ahead of the Storm. If the safe zone later takes you past your original landing area, look for chests you already opened.
Epic lists this under Battle Royale and Zero Build. There is no confirmation in these notes that Fortnite OG, Reload or Save the World uses the same feature.

How long does a chest take to refill?
There is no official number of seconds or minutes. Epic has also not published a maximum number of times any one chest can reopen. A single player’s test might show when one particular chest returns, but that would not prove a universal timer across every location or chest type.
Fortnite chests refill as part of ordinary matches, so the clearest sign that the mechanic has worked is being able to interact with the chest again. Don’t rely on an unverified 90-second claim or assume one chest can supply unlimited loot.
Can a refilled chest give Pirate Shop Access?
The rare Pirate Shop Access reward has been reported from an ordinary-looking Battle Royale chest. Since Fortnite chests refill, revisiting chests is a reasonable thing to try when searching for more loot. But Epic has not confirmed that the special Pirate Shop reward gets a fresh independent roll every time a chest refills.
Epic has published no Pirate Shop percentage, and no number of openings guarantees a token. Our Pirate Shop drop-rate guide explains what the available reports support. The Pirate Shop Access guide covers how the reward is used once you receive it.
If you find ordinary loot in a reopened chest, the refill has worked. That alone doesn’t prove Pirate Shop Access can drop again. Fortnite chests refill for looting, but Epic hasn’t published the special reward’s repeat-opening rules.
Do special Rare Chests and Sprite Chests refill?
Epic has not supplied a full list of eligible chest types. Although Fortnite chests refill in Battle Royale and Zero Build, it would be misleading to promise that a buried Sprite Chest, Rare Chest or Captain X’s giant chained chest follows precisely the same rule.
A buried Sprite Chest is part of the Sprite collection system. Captain X’s mega chest is a separate season mystery. Neither should be treated as a guaranteed repeatable Pirate Shop source. See our chest-locations guide for the differences between ordinary and special containers.
Do repeat openings count for the 25 Treasure Chests quest?
The open 25 Treasure Chests quest has its own progress counter. Epic hasn’t said whether a second opening of the same refilled chest counts. Check the counter after reopening rather than assuming it will work.
Fortnite chests refill, but a safer quest route is still to open the chests you encounter while travelling across the map. That way, you collect loot and advance through an ordinary match without needing to wait for a refresh.
A useful route for reopening chests
Land near several buildings and open the normal chests you find. Collect enough gear to survive, move to the next cluster of buildings and rotate as the Storm changes. If your route naturally returns to an earlier area, check the chests you opened before. Do not risk the safe zone simply to watch one chest. For a different looting change, see our Golden Apple healing guide, which covers Produce Boxes rather than weapon chests.
Fortnite chests refill in Treasure Hunters, which creates more opportunities to collect loot during a match. The exact timer, the rules for unusual chest types and any Pirate Shop reward rerolls still require evidence. For the other prizes being reported, see our Treasure Hunt chest rewards list.
