The Forge Runes: How to Get, Equip and Upgrade Them

The Forge Runes are special upgrades that come mostly from enemy drops. Attach them at the Runemaker to add mining effects to pickaxes, defensive traits to armour or combat bonuses to weapons. You need a compatible item with an open socket before a rune can be used, so getting a good drop is only the first step.

Unlike some other equipment systems, rune slots don’t work identically on pickaxes and weapons. A newly forged sword often needs several enhancements, while certain pickaxes arrive with sockets already unlocked. Here’s how to farm runes efficiently and use them without spending resources on the wrong item.

Where to find The Forge Runes

Open the Index in your inventory, select Enemies and inspect the rune entries in each enemy’s loot table. The game lists which runes that mob can drop and their chances. Fight enemies you can defeat reliably, rather than assuming the highest-level enemy is always the best farm. For an early mining rune, Delver Zombies in Stonewake’s Cross can drop Miner Shard I. In Forgotten Kingdom, Bomber Skeletons can drop Miner Shard I and Blast Chip I, while Deathaxe Skeletons can drop Flame Spark I and Briar Notch I. Gather their Essences too, since enhancing your gear requires those materials.

Finding the Runemaker

The Runemaker is near the Forge at Stonewake’s Cross, with additional NPCs in later worlds including Forgotten Kingdom. Speak to him, select the equipment category, choose your eligible item and then pick the rune you want to attach. Confirm the Gold or material cost shown. The Forge Runes cannot simply be equipped by dragging them from Personal Stash; the NPC handles attaching and removing them.

Which rune works on which item?

Armour runes are restricted to helmets, chestpieces and leggings. Weapon runes fit combat weapons, and pickaxe runes fit mining tools. A Miner Shard with a luck or yield bonus isn’t interchangeable with a sword damage rune. Check both the main effect and any rolled secondary traits before confirming a socket, because duplicate rune names can have different bonus strengths.

Unlocking weapon and armour rune slots

To use The Forge Runes on new combat gear, visit the Enhancer and upgrade the item using Gold and Essences. The first rune slot unlocks at +3 and a second at +6 on eligible weapons and armour. The +9 enhancement is not a confirmed additional rune-slot threshold. Later enhancement levels can fail; current guides disagree about the exact downgrade penalty. Check the success chance and failure description in the live interface before risking an expensive attempt.

Why pickaxes work differently

Many pickaxes have fixed rune sockets when bought. Gold generally offers one, Platinum often two, and some advanced tools such as Arcane have three. You don’t raise their rune-slot count by using the combat equipment Enhancer. The Forge Runes are therefore especially convenient for miners who already own a compatible tool; inspect socket counts when buying a pickaxe if runes are part of your planned farming build.

Useful early rune effects

Miner Shard is worth checking when it rolls extra mining luck, yield or efficiency. Ward Patch can strengthen armour defence. Weapon runes can add elemental damage, healing or other combat effects, depending on their roll. Choose the rune that helps with what you actually do: mining efficiency for gathering, defence for surviving hits or damage for faster enemy clears. For a mining session, that usually means a good mining rune on a tool with open slots.

Farming The Forge Runes efficiently

Use the Index to find an enemy that drops your desired rune, then clear its spawn repeatedly while collecting Essences. If an advanced enemy takes too long to defeat, a weaker target with a slightly worse drop table may offer more attempts per hour. Check the rune’s actual secondary stats before equipping or selling it. Compare the rolled stats before selling unwanted rune duplicates; weak copies can help fund later upgrades.

How to replace a rune

To reuse a rune, speak to the Runemaker, choose the equipped item, click its rune slot and select Detach. Confirm the displayed Gold cost. The rune returns to your stash and can then be installed on new gear. This lets you carry a valuable drop forward into better equipment. The Forge Runes are worth preserving if the secondary roll is strong, even when your current weapon is temporary. If a socket is no longer available after changing the enhancement level, inspect your inventory and equipment before assuming the rune was destroyed.

The Forge Runes: Why a rune won’t attach

Check three things: the rune category matches the selected item, the item has an empty slot, and you can afford the NPC fee. A sword without +3 enhancement often has no open socket, while a pickaxe may simply have reached its fixed capacity. If the Runemaker shows the rune but not the equipment, switch to the correct category first. The Forge Runes won’t bypass the equipment’s own slot limits.

Keep spare Essences for opening the slots rather than spending everything on attaching the first rune.
