Terraria crossplay already works between compatible PC and mobile versions using IP-based multiplayer. Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch players are still waiting for the first official console crossplay update. That support is planned for Terraria 1.4.6. Re-Logic’s 29 October announcement confirmed the update was still undergoing final testing, with no public release date set.

Re-Logic and DR Studios are releasing the new multiplayer features in two stages. Phase One will add local-network multiplayer between supported devices and remote connections using an IP address and port. Those connections can include dedicated servers, but they aren’t limited to them. Phase Two is intended to make playing across networks easier through shareable session IDs or join codes. That feature is still being developed and isn’t included in the first rollout. Neither phase should be confused with cross-saving characters or worlds between devices.

Does Terraria crossplay work on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and mobile?

It depends on which devices you’re using and how the multiplayer session is hosted. PC and mobile users can already join a compatible dedicated server. The new Terraria crossplay update is the missing piece for console-to-PC, console-to-mobile and cross-console sessions. You cannot assume a standard Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo friend invitation will connect someone playing on a different device.

Here is the current picture. The planned Phase One connections below will only apply after Terraria 1.4.6 is actually released and running on the supported devices.

How Terraria crossplay Phase One will work

Phase One has two connection methods. On a local network, compatible devices will be able to discover and join sessions together. Over the internet, players will be able to connect to a compatible host by entering its IP address and port. This includes dedicated servers, but the plan doesn’t restrict remote play to rented servers.

Those are different from joining a friend’s game through their console account. If the host runs the game from a home connection, router or firewall settings may need attention. A hosted server can handle those details differently, so don’t assume everybody will need to change their router settings. The server must also be running a compatible version.

The February 2026 developer preview showed a revised multiplayer menu with local and remote sessions. That image is a preview, not proof that the menu is already enabled on your console or that the final release will use identical button labels.

What will Terraria crossplay Phase Two add?

Phase Two is designed to make the joining process easier. Re-Logic and DR Studios plan a session ID or join code that friends can share across networks. Rather than asking a friend to copy an IP address and port, you would use the code to connect through the new cross-network system.

Phase Two is planned to follow Phase One, but it has no confirmed launch date. The fact that Terraria 1.4.6 has reached final testing does not mean those join codes will be available with the first release.

Can PC and mobile players join each other now?

Yes, with the right setup. Compatible desktop and mobile builds have supported cross-platform play through a dedicated server. Both players still need compatible versions and the right connection details. This isn’t the same as sending a universal friend invitation between every edition of Terraria.

For existing Terraria crossplay connections, compare the game and server versions first. An update mismatch can prevent a successful connection even when both devices have internet access. Use the server’s correct address and port and make sure the network allows the connection.

Will Terraria crossplay work between Xbox and PlayStation?

Phase One is intended to bring consoles into the same local-network and IP-based multiplayer options already used by PC and mobile players. That is the planned route for players using different console families to share a session after 1.4.6 launches. It does not establish that every platform-to-platform invitation method will be supported.

If your group has Xbox, PlayStation and PC players, the plan is to connect through a compatible LAN session or a host’s IP address after 1.4.6 launches. A normal console friends-list invitation isn’t the promised connection method. Once the release arrives, the official menus should be checked before giving exact join-button instructions.

Will you need a dedicated server or port forwarding?

For a remote connection in Phase One, the plan is to enter the host’s IP address and port. A dedicated server can be that host, but it isn’t the only possibility. Whether port forwarding is required depends on the hosting arrangement: a professionally hosted public server is different from a server running behind a home router.

Local sessions are different again because the players are already on the same network. A local session shouldn’t require you to share a public IP address with someone sitting on the same network. If the game cannot discover one, checking that devices are on the same network is a better first step than changing router settings at random.

Does Terraria crossplay also support cross-save or mods?

Re-Logic hasn’t promised cross-save or shared progression as part of these two phases. Being able to join a friend in multiplayer does not automatically move your own character, inventory or world files between a PC and a console.

Modded sessions are another separate question. Terraria crossplay announcements do not confirm that a modded tModLoader world on PC will become available to unmodded console players. Don’t assume a modded PC world will work on consoles unless Re-Logic provides compatible mod support.

When is Terraria crossplay coming to consoles?

Re-Logic said on 29 October 2026 that Crossplay Phase One was built and undergoing final testing. It hoped to resume platform submissions during the week beginning 2 November after fixing issues found in its last test round. The release still needs platform approval, and no official day or hour has been given.

Follow our Terraria 1.4.6 release date guide for the latest confirmed submission and launch status. Until then, the essential Terraria crossplay distinction is simple: compatible PC and mobile servers work now; console server access is planned for Phase One; and easy join codes belong to Phase Two.
