Risk of Rain 2 Hallowed Concepts beginner’s guide covers the major changes brought to Petrichor V on October 8, 2026, without confusing the paid expansion with the free update. The new systems overlap in surprising ways, so it’s easy to lose a strong run by treating each event like an ordinary Teleporter fight.

Start with the survivors, then work towards the N’tormat, Wake events, Trials and the hidden ritual. This route gives you something useful to pursue without spoiling your run by activating an encounter before your build is ready.

What changes when you enable Hallowed Concepts

The paid expansion introduces two survivors, Enforcer and Acolyte, alongside three new standard stages, three bosses, a new elite type, fresh enemies, 14 Hexes, 11 Hallowed items and the N’tormat Curio. It also adds N’kuhana Trials and Wake events. These aren’t simply extra enemies in familiar stages: several systems feed into one another, so a run can change direction once you collect Pages, accept Hexes or begin a ritual.

Enforcer is available immediately; Acolyte takes a proper run

Enforcer is unlocked by default when you own the DLC. Acolyte needs the A Broken Ritual challenge instead. You’ll need to enter Soulbound Threshold, complete its ritual, beat the two-phase Anima Harvester and revive the fallen Acolyte with a Healing- or Food-tagged item. Make sure you actually carry a qualifying item before entering; a powerful damage build won’t replace that last requirement.

Start by learning how the N’tormat works

The N’tormat is a Curio that opens up a new set of ritual abilities as you collect its Pages. One dependable way to find it is The Wake: interact with an Ancient Sepulcher, which gives living players a Page and gives the Curio to anyone who doesn’t already have it. The subsequent defence lasts 105 seconds. Watch the three Soul Conduits rather than abandoning them to chase monsters across the stage. The number that survive affects the event’s reward.

How to reach the Soulbound Threshold ritual

Collect the necessary Pages, then look for a Shrine of Descent close to a Teleporter while the run is eligible. Activating it modifies the next Teleporter event. After the normal charge reaches 100%, you’ll have an additional overcharge encounter; defeating that wave opens a Ritual Portal near the Teleporter. Take that portal to Soulbound Threshold. You can only trigger the major catastrophe route once in a run, so prepare your healing item and equipment before committing.

Trials and Hexes: know what you’re agreeing to

The expansion’s three named Winnowing trials are Survival, Predation and Mortality. They test different things: enduring threats, hunting targets and operating under a time constraint. Ritual Gongs lead into N’kuhana Trials. Hexes, meanwhile, impose negative effects that can be cleansed at Hallowed Shrines for an item choice. Treat a Hex like a temporary debt against your build: check its actual penalty before stacking another, particularly when it affects healing, maximum health or visibility.

Use Hallowed Shrines to turn disadvantages into rewards

The ordinary Hallowed Shrine offers interactions that deal with Hexes, while an improved version appears after completing the Soulbound Threshold ritual. The improved shrine offers stronger choices, including opportunities for Hallowed items. Don’t burn every healing resource just before the Anima Harvester: its second phase gives players three random Hexes, and you’ll want enough survivability to finish the fight and claim the shrine rewards afterwards.

What’s free, and what needs the DLC?

The October 8 update also includes six new unlockable abilities for existing survivors: Commando’s Sabotage, Huntress’s Laser Cyclone, Acrid’s Cloying Breath, Artificer’s Tectonic Blast, Engineer’s Laser Cutter and REX’s Proliferation. Those belong to the free update, not the paid Hallowed Concepts package. The paid DLC adds Enforcer and Acolyte, and buying it is necessary to select its two survivors. In co-op, a single DLC owner enables expansion monsters, stages and items for a lobby, but other players don’t gain the ability to select DLC survivors or permanently unlock expansion content.

A good first-run route

Start with Enforcer or a survivor you already know well, and make a build that can hold a fixed area without sacrificing mobility. Look for an Ancient Sepulcher and finish a Wake when it appears. Build up Pages, try a manageable Trial, and keep a Healing-tagged item in reserve for the Acolyte rescue. If a Shrine of Descent appears, only activate it once you’ve prepared for an extra Teleporter fight and a longer hidden-realm encounter. That’s a much better way to learn the new systems than trying to complete every secret during your first run.
