The Fortnite OG Zapper Trap returns with the October 15 v42.40 update, bringing an unusual throwable back to the Season X island. Instead of equipping a trap through the usual building menu, you throw the item at a surface and it creates an electrified trap on both sides. Anyone who walks too close can get a nasty surprise.
Epic added it alongside the Legendary Tactical SMG and Shield Bubble, while several other weapons were vaulted. If you haven’t used the Zapper since the original Season X, the important thing to remember is that it takes up an inventory slot and can be deployed without first building a normal trap piece.
Fortnite OG Zapper Trap: Where to find the Zapper Trap

Queue into Fortnite OG after installing v42.40 and search normal loot sources. Epic lists Zapper Trap under the mode’s newly available items, rather than as a Battle Royale Loot Hack, so you don’t have to unlock it with Sprite Dust in your Personal Loot Pool.
Look for the Fortnite OG Zapper Trap in normal loot while exploring the Season X island. Chests and floor loot are useful places to check; fighting Cube Monsters isn’t an unlock requirement.
How to throw and place a Zapper Trap
Equip the item from your inventory, aim at a nearby building piece and throw it. The trap attaches to the surface and creates an electrified hazard on both sides. In its original version, throwing it onto suitable ground could even create the wall it needed, rather than requiring you to build one in advance.
The Fortnite OG Zapper Trap needs a moment to arm before it fires. That means throwing one at an enemy who’s already running past the wall is less reliable than placing it where they’re about to move. Think of doors, tight corridors and escape routes rather than empty ground in the open.
Does it damage players on both sides?
Yes. Its defining mechanic is the double-sided shock. Someone positioned close enough to either side of the placed trap can be hit when it triggers. That’s why it can surprise an opponent who assumes they’re safe on the opposite face of the wall.
The original Zapper Trap hit for 50 damage after a brief arming delay. Its timing matters more than throwing it at the last second: place it before an opponent rushes through a doorway.
Best places to use the Fortnite OG Zapper Trap
It works particularly well in a doorway or narrow passage where an opponent is likely to move through a predictable spot. In a building fight, throwing it at a nearby wall can force the other player to change direction instead of following you immediately.
Put the Fortnite OG Zapper Trap beside a doorway, a tight corridor or the wall an opponent is likely to push. If they spot it, they may change direction, giving you a chance to reposition.
How to avoid a Fortnite OG Zapper Trap

If you see an unfamiliar electrical trap on a wall, don’t sprint blindly towards it. Keep a little distance from the surface and look for another route through the building. The damage zone is close to the trap’s face, so it doesn’t control an entire room from any distance.
A player carrying a Fortnite OG Zapper Trap may try to throw it after you’ve committed to a doorway. If you hear or see the placement, change course before the trap arms. You can also use your own cover to keep the opponent from pushing while you move away.
Zapper Trap versus the ordinary Damage Trap
The key difference is how you deploy it. The Zapper is a throwable utility item occupying a normal inventory slot; the traditional Damage Trap is selected through the trap-building system. Zapper can create a hazard quickly without going through the usual sequence of placing a trap on your own structure.
Keep a weapon ready after throwing it. The trap can interrupt a push, but an opponent who moves away or survives the shock can still fight back.
What else changed in Fortnite OG v42.40?
Retail Row replaced Mega Mall and now contains Cube Monsters spawning from Obelisks. Moisty Palms took over from Paradise Palms, with a Rift Zone that disguises crouching players as random props. Those are map changes rather than requirements for using the Zapper Trap.
The update also brings back Shield Bubble, Legendary Tactical SMG, Suppressed Assault Rifle, Flint-Knock Pistol and Bouncer. If you haven’t played OG in a while, expect both the map and loot pool to feel different. The Fortnite OG Zapper Trap is just one of the returning ways to catch somebody off guard.
