How to Get Flint in Valheim and What It Is Used For

Flint in Valheim on a Meadows shoreline

Flint in Valheim is scattered along the water’s edge in the Meadows biome. Look for small, pale grey stones on beaches, riverbanks and the edges of shallow water, then press the interact key to pick them up. You don’t need a pickaxe, a Workbench or a defeated boss to gather Flint.

It’s one of the most useful materials in your first few days because it lets you craft a better axe, a knife, a spear and improved arrows. You’ll also need Flint for the Chopping Block and Tanning Rack, which increase your Workbench’s level and open up more crafting options.

Where to find Flint in Valheim

The most reliable place to find Flint in Valheim is the Meadows shoreline. Follow the edge of a river, lake or sea, watching both the dry bank and the first stretch of shallow water. Flint appears as a smooth, light-coloured, slightly shiny stone that looks different from the larger rocks scattered across the grass.

If the beach beside your base is empty, carry on around the next bend or follow another nearby stretch of water. Searching deep inland wastes time: the material appears by water rather than among trees. Keep an eye out for boars and Greylings, although Meadows shores are generally manageable with basic equipment.

How to pick up Flint

Getting Flint in Valheim is much simpler than mining ore. Walk towards a loose stone until the Flint prompt appears and press your interact key. The stone comes loose and is added to your inventory when you’re close enough. If it doesn’t appear in your inventory straight away, step towards it before moving on.

There’s no tool requirement and no reason to hit Flint with an axe or pickaxe. Flint can also go through a normal portal, so you can bring it home easily if your base is far from the collection spot.

What is Flint used for in Valheim?

Flint in Valheim is an early crafting material, but its Workbench upgrades make it valuable long after you’ve made your first weapon. These are the principal recipes and the Flint required for each:

ItemFlint neededOther materials
Flint Axe64 Wood
Flint Knife42 Wood, 2 Leather Scraps
Flint Spear105 Wood, 2 Leather Scraps
Flinthead Arrows (20)28 Wood, 2 Feathers
Chopping Block1010 Wood
Tanning Rack1510 Wood, 20 Leather Scraps, 5 Deer Hide

The Chopping Block raises a nearby Workbench to level 2, allowing additional recipes, while the Tanning Rack raises it to level 3. Workbench upgrades need to be placed close enough to the station to connect. The Flinthead Arrow recipe also requires a level 2 Workbench, so build the Chopping Block before trying to make those arrows.

What should you craft first with Flint?

When you’re short on Flint in Valheim, make the Flint Axe if you need a more effective early chopping tool or weapon. The Flint Spear is another option if you prefer quick melee attacks and a throwable weapon; our Flint Spear guide goes into its strengths and limitations.

Next, save ten Flint for the Chopping Block. Unlocking Workbench level 2 gives you more crafting possibilities than spending every piece on spare equipment. Once you have deer hide and leather scraps, gather another fifteen Flint for the Tanning Rack. Our deer hide guide covers another ingredient you’ll need.

How to farm Flint quickly

The best way to gather Flint in Valheim is to walk a long Meadows shoreline in one direction, collecting every stone that appears near the water. Start close to your base, check little coves and river mouths, and mark any especially convenient stretches on your map. You can make this a regular collection route rather than spending time searching random patches of grass.

Flint can reappear along the shoreline after some time, but you won’t necessarily find it again on the very next trip. If you need a large amount immediately, explore a fresh length of Meadows coast instead of waiting at one empty beach. Take a stack home whenever you’re gathering wood, berries or other early resources nearby.

Why can’t I find Flint in Valheim?

If Flint in Valheim seems impossible to find, check the biome first. A river running through the Black Forest is not the same as a Meadows shoreline. Return to the Meadows and search right beside the water, including submerged stones in very shallow spots. Flint is small enough to overlook when the ground is covered with grass or reeds.

If you can see Flint but can’t collect it, move closer, press the interact key again and check that you have room in your inventory. You don’t need to defeat Eikthyr or build a pickaxe, so neither of those is blocking you.

Can Flint go through portals?

Yes. Flint in Valheim is teleportable under normal world settings, unlike restricted metal ores and bars. If you later relocate your base, you can move Flint through a portal without using a cart or ship just for this material.
