Fortnite black bars on the sides of your screen in Ranked are often intentional. Epic says competitive modes, including Ranked and tournaments, are restricted to a 16:9 aspect ratio. If you play on a 21:9 ultrawide monitor, Fortnite can add side bars to maintain the permitted format rather than stretching the view across the full display.
That restriction is different from a genuine black-screen fault or a resolution that has accidentally changed. Check whether the bars appear only in Ranked before downloading a resolution utility or modifying game configuration files.
Why Ranked adds black bars to ultrawide monitors
Epic’s Fortnite graphics support page explicitly states that Ranked, tournaments and similar competitive playlists are restricted to 16:9. Fortnite black bars on the sides of a 21:9 display are therefore expected. They keep the competitive field of view consistent rather than granting wider peripheral vision to players with particular monitors. Using a 2560×1080 or 3440×1440 screen doesn’t override that playlist rule.
Can you remove the bars with stretched resolution?
You can change Windows display resolutions, but that doesn’t make a 21:9 aspect ratio officially supported in competitive Fortnite. Some custom stretched configurations make the image look distorted or introduce scaling problems without restoring the wider field of view. The restriction belongs to the mode itself. Avoid guides promising an undocumented config edit or third-party app that guarantees Fortnite black bars disappear while Ranked rules remain unchanged.

Fortnite black bars: check the difference between Ranked and normal playlists
Launch a regular supported island or noncompetitive mode and compare its display output with Ranked using the same screen. If bars appear only in Ranked, the official 16:9 restriction explains them. If they appear in every game and across the Windows desktop, check monitor aspect-ratio and scaling settings. Fortnite black bars that appear only in one playlist should not be approached as a broken graphics card.
Video resolution and Windows scaling
Open Settings > Video and verify that your selected resolution and window mode are suitable for the monitor. For general graphic problems Epic recommends checking the PC requirements, testing a Low quality preset and 100% 3D Resolution. That 3D setting affects rendering sharpness, not the Ranked aspect-ratio restriction. Change one option, Apply, then test; make a note of the resolution before trying an alternative.
Fortnite black bars: what about the Field of View slider?
Fortnite has Field of View controls under the Game tab where supported, including minimum and maximum FOV options. These don’t remove competitive mode restrictions. Epic separately states that 21:9 isn’t supported in Ranked or competitive playlists, so moving FOV sliders cannot turn an ultrawide Ranked match into a 21:9 display. Configure the FOV for comfort within what the playlist permits.

When black bars really indicate a display fault
If you see bars while browsing menus, on the Windows desktop or in other games unexpectedly, inspect monitor scaling, GPU control-panel scaling, HDMI/DisplayPort output and the native resolution. A display set to preserve a narrower aspect ratio can show bars even outside Fortnite. Fortnite black bars appearing alongside flickering, corruption or a black screen warrant separate driver and hardware checks.
What setup should ultrawide players use?
Keep the display at its normal desktop resolution, then let Fortnite use the supported aspect ratio in competitive playlists. If you prefer a filled screen in noncompetitive modes, check their actual support rather than forcing a value. The objective is a stable, readable image; a stretched picture with incorrect geometry is rarely a reliable substitute for the format Epic officially allows.
