ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 28, A Thousand Points of Light, is a defensive air battle over Cima Island. Operation Locust Purge throws bomber waves at the base before a much tougher enemy squadron joins the fighting. The mistake to avoid is getting so wrapped up in dogfights that the bombers slip through while you’re chasing a lone escort.

This mission also gives you a runway for rearming, which is useful because the air-to-air fighting can drain a full loadout. We’ll cover the order to target the bomber groups, how to handle Shadow 22 and the hidden ace Harmonius requirement if you’re replaying after the story.

ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 28: Best aircraft and weapons for bomber defence

For ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 28, bring your best dedicated air-to-air fighter and high-capacity anti-air special weapons. Multi-target air-to-air missiles are helpful against bomber formations, while accurate missiles and the gun are useful once you’re stuck in a closer fight. This is not a ground-attack operation, so an expensive anti-ship loadout won’t help. Parts improving missile guidance, speed and ammunition capacity make sense here.

1. Launch and intercept the first bomber waves

At the start of ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 28, take off from the Cima Island base and identify the bombers heading towards it. Tu-160s and B-1s approach in different waves and directions. Prioritise these large aircraft ahead of the fighters protecting them. An escort can distract you for a surprisingly long time; a bomber that reaches its attack run can do the damage the mission is specifically asking you to prevent.

After the first group, check the radar edges rather than assuming the next wave is coming from the same direction. Intercept early, preferably before the group gets close to the island, and let Joker Flight spread its attacks among the incoming contacts. Save at least a few special missiles for the next wave instead of firing everything at the first formation.

2. Watch the northern and southern approaches

More bombers arrive from the north and south in ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 28. Divide your attention between the two approach routes and take down the attackers while they still have distance to cover. If you’ve been relying on standard missiles for dogfighting escorts, now is the moment when you’ll be glad you kept the multi-target special weapons in reserve.

The base runway is available for resupply. Approach at a manageable speed, follow the landing prompt and complete the landing to reload. You can repair and rearm rather than taking the entire operation on one missile stock. Don’t attempt the landing while an unchecked bomber group is nearly over the base, though. Clear the immediate danger before dropping altitude for the runway.

3. Retake air superiority, then fight Shadow 22

After the base defence, ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 28 first switches to a timed air-superiority objective. Clear the remaining hostile aircraft while friendly reinforcements and electronic-warfare support join the fight. When that stage ends, Shadow 22 and his Su-57 wingmen arrive for the final engagement. Shadow 22 is tougher than the planes you’ve been fighting, so leave him until you’ve thinned out his companions. He can burn through your missiles if you fire as soon as a lock appears. Close the distance, use your gun when there’s a clean opportunity and let your wingmen help keep the other aircraft busy.

Bandai Namco adjusted Shadow 22 and his wingmen’s flare limits in update 1.01.002. That matters if you’re following an older launch-version video that relies on a particular barrage of missiles. Try controlled attacks and make use of openings after evasive manoeuvres rather than treating one old strategy as the only route.

4. Finish the aerial battle

Keep picking off the remaining priority aircraft until the mission transitions. Once the Shadow encounter is over, the story continues with an aerial refuelling sequence. The important part is to defeat the threats in the air rather than searching the island for a hidden surface objective. If you’re low on ammunition before the elite squadron appears, use the runway earlier while there’s room to do so.

ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 28: How to unlock Harmonius

The optional ace in ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 28 is Harmonius, an F-35C that appears after the campaign on a Veteran or higher Free Mission replay. The special condition in ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 28 is to shoot down five bombers within five minutes of the start. Do this during the early waves, when the larger aircraft are plentiful. Focusing on escorts instead of bombers can cost you the time window.

You can make this easier by bringing multi-target air-to-air weapons and directing your wingmen to engage separate enemies. Once you’ve met the bomber requirement, keep checking the radar for the arriving named ace rather than assuming every F-35C contact is an ordinary reinforcement.

ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 28: S rank, resupply and Assault Records

There’s one important Assault Record complication as well. The Lux Lunae 22nd Unit includes Acrobates, whose appearance depends on shooting down Shadow 24 back in Mission 18 and then continuing the same Campaign run to this mission. A standalone Free Mission replay won’t carry that earlier story flag across. That condition is separate from Harmonius, so don’t mix the two up.

For an S-rank attempt, speed and total target score both matter, but don’t use an old patch-specific score number as an absolute rule. The current mission rewards clearing the bomber waves quickly, maintaining a healthy attack rhythm and finishing the late elite pilots without prolonged misses. The runway can save a run if you would otherwise enter the final phase with almost no missiles. Update 1.01.002 also fixed a separate Mission 28 progression bug where the radio could fail to play when taking off after a resupply. Update the game if you’re still running an older version.

If you’re just trying to complete the story of ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 28, make the bombers your first concern and leave Harmonius for Free Mission. For a collection run, prioritise the five-bomber requirement from the start. Either way, the winning principle is the same: remove the aircraft threatening the base before taking an unnecessary detour after smaller fighters.

Why the bombing run keeps succeeding

If the defence fails, watch for bombers arriving from the opposite direction to your current dogfight. A dangerous aircraft is not always the one closest to you; it’s the one closest to reaching the island. Use the wider radar, switch targets often and move towards incoming groups before they get into position. You can return to escorts once the larger threats have been destroyed.
