Dual Reality Gameplay

The Medium has a unique mechanic called Dual Reality.

With the power of modern graphics cards, and the power of the recently released Xbox Series X, the game renders two different worlds at the same time, the regular world and the spirit world.

The player is able to jump between the two with no loading screens, allowing for deeper exploration and puzzle solving while staying immersed in the game.

Check out the Dual Reality in action.

Release Date and Platforms

The Medium will be released on January 28th 2021 on Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Windows Store and Steam.

PC System Requirements

Due to needing to render two game worlds side by side, The Medium does require some power to run at a high frame rate and resolution.

Here are the spec requirements for the game.

Ray Tracing and DLSS

Due to being a flagship next gen title, The Medium will support both Ray Tracing and DLSS.

To take full advantage, it is likely that you will need either the recommended PC requirements, or a RTX 3000 series card, but DLSS will also help with frame rate.

Xbox Series X|S players don’t need to worry about specs though as Ray Tracing will also be supported on the console version.

Xbox One

As of right now there appears to be no plans for a Xbox One port of the game.

Due to the lack of power compared to the Xbox Series X, it would be likely that a lot of sacrifices would have to be made, such as loading screens while switching between worlds.

It is also possible that the Xbox One wouldn’t be able to render two worlds simultaneously.

So it appears that current Xbox One owners will have to wait until they upgrade to be able to jump into this next gen title.

Pre-Order

Pre-orders are live for the game and can be purchased by clicking the links below.

Alternatively, players can pre-order directly from the console/launcher.

Game Pass

Despite not being a first party title, or from a studio in the Xbox Games Studios umbrella, The Medium will be released on day one on Xbox Game Pass, giving players the chance to play the game as part of their monthly subscription.

The Medium will be available on Game Pass for both console and PC.

One great thing about the Xbox Series X is Game Pass, allowing players to play all first and second party titles on day one as part of their subscription, rather than forking out £40-60 for each new title.

PS5 Port

Despite not being under the Xbox Games Studios umbrella, at least for now The Medium is exclusive to Xbox.

But in an interview, Bloober Team, stated there are currently no plans to bring the game to Sony’s latest console.

“It’s an outcome of our relations with Microsoft, the hardware we needed, and how our development progress and Microsoft’s plans for Xbox Series X align. It’s an exciting adventure bringing The Medium as one of the first games for Xbox Series X.”

However, this doesn’t mean that it won’t come to the platform in the future. Numerous games have launched first on Xbox before moving to PlayStation, with no timed exclusive deal in place, such as The Blair Witch Project.

But for now, PS5 owners will have to play it on their PC if they don’t own an Xbox Series X|S too.
