After almost a year, the worldwide hit Korean series Squid Game is finally having its second season.
Netflix officially announced the comeback of the dark fictional drama in a tweet on June 12, Sunday, saying:
“Red light… GREENLIGHT! Squid Game is officially coming back for Season 2!”
While the new season’s release date hasn’t been announced yet, the streaming platform shared a letter from writer, director, and producer Hwang Dong-hyuk wherein he expressed his gratitude to fans and teased a few details about the upcoming season.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of ‘Squid Game’ to life last year,” he wrote. “But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever. As the writer, director, and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout-out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.”
Hwang also revealed that the protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-Jae) would be returning to the second season, as well as The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), one of the first season’s antagonists.
Fans of Gong Yoo might also see him in the series again as Hwang said that “the man in the suit with Ddakji might be back,” referring to the game’s recruiter.
Lastly, another exciting thing that fans can look forward to is the introduction of Young-hee’s boyfriend. It can be recalled that Young-hee was the infamous doll in the first game called “Red Light Green Light.” Both are modeled after characters in Korean textbooks.
Released in September 2021, Squid Game follows the story of cash-strapped contestants who have to play children’s games for a chance to win a tempting amount of money. Since then, it has become the most-watched series on Netflix. It was extremely popular that most Halloween costumes in 2021 were based on the series, surging the sales of green tracksuits and white slip-on.
