New Samsung TV allows you to stream games and trade NFTs

Samsung’s new range of Neo QLED TVs that will release in 2022 is what we dreamt about 50 years ago when we fantasized about the future, assuming that future included being able to purchase an AI-generated picture of a monkey directly from your smart TV, otherwise this probably wasn’t the focus of an episode of The Jetsons.

Announced during CES 2022, Samsung’s new range of TVs will come with a new dedicated Smart Hub menu which will allow players to control and access a variety of gaming content in one place, including the consoles connected to it, YouTube Gaming, and cloud gaming apps such as Google Stadia and Nvidia’s GeForce Now.

Gamers will simply just pair their controller to the TV and be able to play. More platforms are set to be announced in the future too, which could include the likes of Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Now, and Amazon Luna.

One of the most exciting, and also slightly confusing, pieces of technology in the device will give users the ability to purchase, trade, and display NFTs directly from the TV.

We assume this means that people will be able to connect to a platform such as Open Sea, connect a crypto wallet, purchase Ethereum, and then buy an NFT and use the TV as a giant digital photo frame. It’s not really what I look for in a new TV, but perhaps this is the future of entertainment.

In a statement, Samsung Electronics’ president Won-Jin Lee said,

“We know that gaming continues to increase in popularity for our customers and we have bridged the gap between our Smart TV leadership and advanced gaming software to create an easier way for people to enjoy the games they love, faster.  We developed the Samsung Gaming Hub with our incredible content partners to benefit all gamers, and we plan to continue our collaboration to grow the ecosystem.”

While we don’t think that the NFT capabilities will really change the industry, the cloud gaming possibilities do excite us a lot.

In an October 2020 interview with Stratechery, the head of Xbox Phil Spencer did discuss the future of cloud gaming and how it will become a lot more standard in technology going forward.

“I think you’re going to see lower priced hardware as part of our ecosystem when you think about streaming sticks and other things that somebody might want to just go plug into their TV and go play via xCloud. You could imagine us even having something that we just included in the Game Pass subscription that gave you an ability to stream xCloud games to your television and buying the controller.”

No prices for the new Samsung Neo QLED TVs has been given, but the company is due to give a keynote speech during CES 2022 on January 4th at 6:30 pm PST, so expect to find out more information then.
