After the recent shock announcement that Elon Musk had offered to purchase Twitter, it has finally been confirmed that the sale will happen for a reported $44 billion.

Understandably, some users are concerned about Elon Musk’s plans to take the company private once again, citing free speech as the reason, which could allow for hateful content to flood the site depending on how relaxed the restrictions and moderation will be.

So, if this concerns you and you’d rather just leave Twitter and move to another social platform, here is how to deactivate your Twitter account.

How to deactivate your Twitter account

If you would like to deactivate your Twitter account follow these simple steps.

  • Log in to your Twitter account
  • Click on the three dots underneath the Profile tab
  • Click Settings and Privacy
  • Click Your Account
  • Then click Deactivate your account

This will then give you all of the information you need to know about what will happen to your account once you deactivate it.

“You’re about to start the process of deactivating your Twitter account. Your display name, @username, and public profile will no longer be viewable on Twitter.com, Twitter for iOS, or Twitter for Android.”

What else you should know

“You can restore your Twitter account if it was accidentally or wrongfully deactivated for some time after deactivation.

Some account information may still be available in search engines, such as Google or Bing.

If you just want to change your @username, you don’t need to deactivate your account — edit it in your settings.

To use your current @username or email address with a different Twitter account, change them before you deactivate this account.

If you want to download your Twitter data, you’ll need to complete both the request and download process before deactivating your account.

Links to download your data cannot be sent to deactivated accounts.”

If you’re happy with all of this information, select the reactivation period you would like, either 30 days or 12 months.

This is the timeframe that you have to restore your account after deactivation before it is permanently deleted.

Once you’ve selected it, click the Deactivate button and your Twitter account will be gone.
