How to cancel your Amazon Prime membership

Amazon frown boxes

While Amazon Prime does offer quite a few rewards, if you’re using it for game rewards or quick deliveries, you often only need it for brief periods, leading us to cancel Amazon Prime after we get what we need from it.

But of course, Amazon is aware of that and tries to make the process a bit of a mess – or at least, significantly more of a mess than it needs to be.

How to cancel Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is actually far more of a nuisance to cancel than it has any right to be, but of course, Amazon is just trying to keep your dollars for as long as they can, so are we remotely surprised by that?

You’ll first want to head to your account page by clicking on the button featuring your name next to the search box on the main Amazon page. That’ll take you to the screen show here, where you’ll need to click or tap on the Prime section.

At the top of that screen will be this bar, with various bits of information about your membership – hit the update, cancel and more text to continue to next step.

From here, you’ll need to hit the fairly obvious End membership button at the bottom of the screen – we are here to cancel Amazon Prime after all.

Hit the middle option in the next tab, both the options highlighted or pointed at by blue boxes are designed to make you avoid cancelling Amazon Prime – Amazon wants to keep your money, after all.

Once again, the middle button is the way forward, so hit “continue to cancel” and then you’re nearly finished. Both other buttons will not automatically cancel or even continue to cancel your membership, despite the fact we’re about 5 or 6 steps in at this stage.

With all of steps done, you now arrive here. And unsurprisingly, the option you want is right at the bottom, hidden below various other options that won’t actually end your Prime subscription – despite the fact that at this stage you’ve ignored those buttons at least twice each so far.

Hitting end membership is the end of it, and then you’ll be taken to a screen stating they’re sorry to see you go – or at least sorry you managed to navigate the labyrinth of options they try to throw at you to minimise the number of people who do manage to quit the service.

Is there anything else?

Nope, that’s it – surprisingly once you hit that last button, you are done – there isn’t a second secret one hidden somewhere else.

That’s everything for this not-so-short guide (Thanks, Amazon), if you didn’t know how to cancel your membership, well provided I’ve done my job correctly, now you do. Hopefully, this was pretty easy to follow and helped out. If you’d like to read some more tech articles, you can find them on The Click in our Tech section.
