Pokemon Go: What do Razz berries do?

Razz berries are one of the main consumable items in Pokemon Go, but what exactly do Razz berries do in the game?

What do Razz berries do?

Razz berries are arguably the simplest of all three of the main berry types that currently exist within Pokemon Go. While Nanab berries adjust how often a Pokemon can evade and Pinap berries reward you for successful captures without any other form of bonus, Razz berries simply improve capture odds.

That’s it, that’s the entire purpose of these. If you can hit a Pokemon with a Pokeball but it’s not staying inside of it, it’s time to throw a Razz berry first and see if that helps matters. Just bear in mind that after it breaks out of a Pokeball, the buff will be gone again, just like other berries.

If you can already be reasonably assured that you will capture the Pokemon without it, a Pinap berry will serve you better. If you expect that you’ll struggle to catch it more because you can’t hit the Pokemon in the first place, then a Nanab berry is instead the better option.

You can get these pretty easily through gifts and Pokestops, but the effects aren’t actually that significant, as you’d expect from how common they are. They give you a 1.5x multiplier on the capture chance, meaning a 5% chance would become a 7.5% chance accordingly, and so on.

There is also a more powerful version of the Razz berry, the Golden Razz berry which does exactly the same thing as Razz berries do, just to a larger extent – with a 2.5 times multiplier rather than a 1.5, resulting in 12.5% from an original 5% chance instead. As you’d expect, Golden Razz berries are rarer.

Fortunately most of the time, Razz berries do a good enough job and Golden Razz berries are typically only used for rare Pokemon or those from raid battles.
