Pokemon Go has been an ongoing success for years now, but for those who haven’t tried it yet, is the game Free to play? Let’s find out.

Fortunately, this is a pretty simple one to answer so this’ll be a quick one.

Is Pokemon Go free to play?

Pokemon Go is available as a free to play mobile game, which can be found on a few different app stores, the official website offers download links for Google Play, Apple App Store and the Galaxy Store.

While some features in the game are explicitly premium, they are quite rare and the game itself is freely accessible. Pretty much every item in the in-game store is available using PokeCoins, a currency that can be freely earned by players on a daily basis – we wrote about how to earn them here.

You can also buy PokeCoins to skip a bit of the item grind, though the majority of the item store is easy enough to get through either gameplay or gifts from your in-game friends.

Is anything premium only?

Very little of the game is gated by a paywall, but regular events like Community days and Go Fest do have these.

The upcoming Eevee-focused Community day for example has premium tickets available that add extra things to do during the event, such as additional research – these tickets are usually around $1, and are thus quite cheap. Similarly, Pokemon Go Fest, a once-a-year event, also has premium tickets that are typically more expensive.

Though it should be noted that Community days are once-a-month events, Go Fest is the once-a-year highlight event of the entire game, and both still provide significant benefits to F2P players without tickets regardless.

Anything else to be aware of?

Not particularly, Pokemon Go is largely F2P and with a very successful business model if the app’s revenue is anything to go by. There are tickets to some of the larger events that are only available to premium players, but the game is very much a complete experience without them.
