Pokemon Go: How to defeat Genesect, weakness and counters

Genesect in the Pokemon anime

Genesect is a Gen V Bug/Steel dual-type Mythical Pokemon, but do you know the counters and weakness of the Paleozoic Pokemon?

Genesect is a seriously strong Pokemon, but fortunately enough it does have at least one significant weakness in Pokemon Go.

What counters Genesect in Pokemon Go?

If you’re familiar with the Pokemon series, you’ll know by now that certain types have either (or both) of a damage advantage or incoming damage reduction in certain matchups, known as super effective and not very effective respectively. Genesect is a Bug/Steel dual-type Pokemon, which makes for an extremely powerful combination in terms of what attacks it can resist, and the presence of Drives give it access to a wider variety of move-types than most Pokemon get.

With this typing, Genesect resists 9 different Types of attacks and only has a weakness against a single type, Fire. This makes the debate about what can be used to counter it pretty simple, fortunately.

Of course, we’ll also take a look to see what moves Genesect has – if only to help us plan for any counter moves the Pokemon might have access to, that might make a Fire/something dual-type preferable over a pure Fire-type.

Genesect can be a bit of a confusing one for moves, as which drive state it has will add an extra move to its pool. By default, Genesect uses Bug and Steel-type attacks. If a drive is added, it can gain Shock, Fire, Ice or Poison-type attacks, dependant on which drive is used, or even a Normal-type attack in the absence of a drive.

In Pokemon Go, each Drive adds a new move or two for Genesect: Chill Drive adds Ice beam, Burn drive adds Flamethrower (and Techno Blast), Shock Drive adds Zap cannon, while Douse Drive adds Gunk Shot. Normal Drive will also give Genesect access to Hyper beam.

Fortunately for Fire-types, none of these moves are any threat to them. That means you can safely take a Fire-type pure Pokemon against Genesect to exploit that weakness, whether it uses the Douse, Shock, Chill or Burn Drive in Pokemon Go, and you have no counters to be concerned about.

Genesect Pokemon Type weakness

To summarise, Genesect is weak to Fire-type attacks, regardless of what drive type it is using. Each drive type of Genesect, be it Douse, Shock, Chill, Burn or even Normal has no counter attack options that help deal with its doubled Fire-type weakness in Pokemon Go – so stick to Fire-types, and you should handle this matchup quite well.

If you somehow don’t have any Fire-types though, at the very least you’ll want to avoid using Grass and Poison-types, as they’ll deal a mere 39% of their usual damage against Genesect.

Anything else to mention?

That’s really it for the weakness and counters of Genesect in Pokemon Go. Stick to Fire-type attacks and you’ll melt the Paleozoic Pokemon for good. It resists a lot of different types, including both of its types alongside Dragon, Fairy, Ice, Normal and Psychic, as well as double resisting Grass and Poison.

With how many resistances Genesect has, it really is best to just use as many Fire-types as you can possibly find.
