Pokemon Go: Dialga Weakness, counters

Dialga looks towards the Sky

Dialga has returned for Pokemon Go’s Ultra Unlock part 1 event, but what weakness exists to help bring down this mighty master of time?

This article is designed to inform you enough about Dialga and any possible weakness to target so that you know how to defeat the legendary Temporal Pokemon.

What is the weakness of Dialga in Pokemon Go?

As is typical in any Pokemon title, including Go, precisely how strong a Pokemon is and what moves it uses may vary depending on the individual, but there are a few things that remain consistent across all of any given species of Pokemon.

The easiest of these to exploit is often the Pokemon’s Type.

Dialga is a Steel/Dragon Dual-Type Pokemon. This is a fairly unique typing as far as the entire Pokemon Franchise goes, with only one other example of it. In Pokemon Go, in particular, it is a unique typing.

It’s a pretty damn good Typing too, with only two weakness options and an incredibly 10 different resisted types – meaning if you want to bring down Dialga, you better be prepared.

Those two Type weakness options? Those are Fighting-Type and Ground-Type, both of which will deal 160% damage in total. For all of the Types to avoid, however? We’ll be needing a list for those, so I’ll summarise what we know so far below.

Dialga Resistances
  • Bug
  • Electric
  • Flying
  • Normal
  • Psychic
  • Rock
  • Steel
  • Water
  • Grass
  • Poison

Bolded types are doubled resisted, dealing only 39% damage and should be avoided by Attackers at all cost. The remaining types deal only 62.5% of their usual damage.

Dialga Weaknesses
  • Fighting
  • Ground

Neither of these deals more damage than the other, so it’s time to find a deciding factor in what moves Dialga will be using in battle.

What moves does Dialga use in battle?

Fast Attacks
  • Dragon Breath
  • Metal Claw
Charged Attacks
  • Draco Meteor (Dragon)
  • Iron Head (Steel)
  • Thunder (Electric)

Fighting-Types provide no real advantage against any of these moves, taking the standard full 100% damage from every move Dialga can possibly know. Ground-Types on the other hand can at least get a little bit of an advantage here.

Ground-types are entirely immune to Electric-Type attacks, meaning that they can ignore 20% of all the possible attacks Dialga can throw at them. This isn’t such a huge upgrade on Fighting-Types that you should always pick Ground-Type instead, but it is a nice bonus.

Dialga counters – summary

In summary, you’ll want to be using Fighting-Type or Ground-Types as much as possible against Dialga, while prioritising the usage of Ground-Types as they’ll negate one of his possible attacks – this might be absolutely crucial in a fight against Dialga if Thunder is the only charged attack it has.

With that said, the gap between these types is not that huge, and if your Fighting-Types are much more powerful, they are still a very viable option to counter Dialga with.
