Motive Studio shows off very early Dead Space remake details

Even if there were rumblings of a Dead Space remake for a long time now, it still took all of us by surprise to get the reveal by Motive Studios not too long ago. A Dead Space remake, especially after such a long hiatus, is a welcome surprise to those of us who are starved for more survival horror goodness. Resident Evil has been good to us over the last couple of years, but it’s nice to have some good old-fashioned cosmic space horror to fall back on every now and then.

Dead Space was a promising series that ultimately got mistreated towards the end of its original run, so a remake of the first one could definitely gauge interest for a sequel. Ultimately, however, it’s up to Motive Studios to ensure this remake is something special

How dead is it this time?

During the livestream that took place earlier today, both senior producer Phillipe Ducharme and creative director Roman Camps-Oriola were joined by two “community council members”, Jackie Butler and Kahief Adams. In the livestream we get to see the team at Motive Studio showcase some really early work done so far. It mainly focused on graphical improvements and some new details that have been added to the shooting mechanics.

Ducharme went into detail on a new system that will be added to the shooting mechanics called “peeling;” basically the idea is to add an effect to the limbs of enemies that will peel as they take more damage. Seeing the bone of an enemy is an indicator of how much damage they’ve taken and whether or not the limb will be ready for use as an extra weapon. Hanging limbs will be something to keep an eye out for, as it will be obvious when a Necromorph limb is ready to be torn off and used as a makeshift weapon right on the spot.

When asked about the subject of microtransactions, Ducharme confirmed that there will be none in the game, which is good considering how well that went for Dead Space 3.

A twinkle of hope (and death, of course)

The return of Dead Space looks promising and the people at Motive Studios seem to be great fans of the original game that want to see this series land on its feet. They were even able to get protagonist Isaac Clarke’s original voice actor to return for the remake, which is very cool. However, fans don’t always completely understand what exactly made something they love work well, as they can get caught up in trying to make the game faithful to what it was as opposed to taking the opportunity to create something truly special.

Getting caught up in trying to mimic what made the original great could work against this game’s favor, especially since you can play the original Dead Space right now on your PC. Personally, I hope that this Dead Space is more akin to the Resident Evil remake, where everything looks familiar and very pretty but is remixed enough to make the experience fresh for veteran players. I’m definitely not expecting to be scared by this game, but I do want to at least be surprised and excited to continue playing when I take a break from the game.
