Final Fantasy XIV: New DPS Job?

Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker

In early February, fans of Final Fantasy XIV were gifted a bunch of news about the new Playstation 5 version as well as the new expansion: Endwalker through an Announcement Showcase. With this came the news of two new playable jobs, one of which has been revealed to be the barrier healer: Sage. The other of which hasn’t been fully shown off, aside from the mention that it is a DPS. Here’s all we know about the new DPS job!

DPS

While this may have been mentioned above, the most important aspect of the new job is that it acts as a DPS.

Final Fantasy XIV has three main roles a player can take on, a DPS, Tank, or Healer. DPS, or Damage Per Second, is the role of a primary damage dealer, who’s whole playstyle is to deal as much damage as possible.

That alone already gives us some idea of how the new job will function.

Melee

Additionally, FFXIV lead: Naoki Yoshida, has told us the new job will act as a melee DPS.

Melee jobs are pretty self explanatory, classes that attack close to the target. Some of the DPS, as well as all Tanks, are melee jobs, and now we know the new job will act as a fifth melee DPS.

Weapon and Gear

From here, we can only extrapolate upon minor facts, of which Yoshi P has given us.

First of all, we know the new job will be sharing gear with the Dragoon job. Various groups of classes share gear with one another, but Dragoon was the sole exception to the rule until now. We can speculate then that the job would be one that makes sense to wear “maiming” gear.

Yoshi P also tends to hint towards future classes through his shirts during presentations. He once wore a Spider-Man shirt to a Stormblood reveal, and the new job was Samurai. This references the director of a number of Spider Man movies: Sam Raimi as well as a samurai Spider Man figure he bought at the time. This time, he wore shirts featuring reapers and with scythe imagery. The main conclusion to draw is that the new job will use a scythe.

Beyond that though, we can think of what things would make sense in using a scythe. Reaper, for example could be the new job. Fans have been hoping for a Necromancer job, and a prominent necromancer in the game uses a scythe as well.

All in all, its pretty safe to say that the job will be a close range scythe wielder. Its actual move set or playstyle though is less clear. Maybe a slashing reaper? Maybe a close ranged magical attacker?

Hopefully all our questions about the new DPS job will be answered at the digital Fan Festival this year!
