Donut County Review – The Original Hole Game (Xbox One)

Donut County Review

Last Updated on: 15th February 2021, 05:21 pm

I decided to review Donut County recently since it came to Xbox Game Pass and think players should have the right to a chance to become fans of this crafty title while it’s available.

Donut County is the incredibly cute and literal original hole game created by Ben Esposito and published by Annapurna Interactive.

As weird as that may sound, Donut County literally invented the game Donut County before mobile games such as hole.io were released, mocking this game’s built-from-scratch design and core features.

The difference between the two is small and large simultaneously: as Donut County is strictly a story-driven game and hole.io is simply players eating things with holes, trying to become large enough to eat each other first.

While the games may sound different, hole.io stole the core concept of the highly original Donut County and turned into an inexpensive ripoff, played by millions.

Hole.io may have the core gameplay feature of Donut County and was released first, Donut County’s story, characters and wonderful comedy will have you hooked just as it did me.

The reason I compare the two is because anyone thinking about playing Donut County should know it is not like games it is compared to and is well worth playing regardless of your first impressions.

Donut County was originally released for PlayStation 4, iOS, macOS and Windows platforms in August 2018 with later releases to Xbox One and Nintendo Switch that year. Donut County was released for Android in December 2020.

Most recently, Donut County was added to Xbox Game Pass.

Donut County: A Comedic Indie Tale

This is a sweet, comedic indie ride all the way through and upon it’s release and still is one of my favorite games I’ve ever played entirely on mobile but I must say it is a different experience on Xbox.

In Donut County, you star as an almost lovable Racoon, BK. BK is obsessed with getting a drone so he works at the donut store delivering donuts. And Holes. But nobody is asking for holes.

Donut County has you specifically play as BK as he’s moving this hole, eating literally anything in site. However, this wouldn’t be much of a game without a little strategy or puzzle element to make you think.

While you may be a hole that swallows all within its grasp, you start small and can only eat what can fit in the hole so that requires you to be smart what you eat.

As well as your size and what you eat, you also must be aware of the order that you swallow things, as they may trigger events that are required to complete the level.

What’s The “Hole” Point of Donut County?

Well what happens to the townsfolk is what is played out through your game. As you are eating everything in site with your beautiful destruction we are also reliving the events that happened.

Nine hundred ninety nine feet below the surface of Donut County is where all the people and things, practically the entire landscape, that have been swallowed by the hole have ended up.

Underground and miserable, they tell the tale of what happened to them only to realize BK is behind it all.

Donut County Trashopedia

Being that raccoons typically love trash, it’s only fitting that after you complete each level you’re given the option to view the Trashopedia.

The Trashopedia is a record of all of the things you had eaten with the hole in that level. Also giving a funny or playful description to that object perfectly fitting for a raccoon.

You can also return to the Donut County Trashopedia to review all of the trash you’ve collected.

Great Delivery!

After every level, or delivery as the game calls it, you will see the character you delivered to falling down the hole with everything else you have eaten on that level.

BK is supposed to be delivering these donuts but ends up “getting rid of people’s trash” as he calls it.

You will also see, after each delivery, how much XP you have earned from the level completed.

When you’ve earned enough coins you can also buy some pretty cool stuff like energy drinks and a quadcopter!

You start at level 9 which comes off very strange, but it all makes sense.. eventually.

Overall, Donut County is an absolutely wonderful time all the way through with a few surprising twists thrown at you.

From the first hole to the final part of the game and even the end credits, Donut County will stay as one of the most memorable and original games I’ve played and thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end.
