For as long as players can remember, the Xbox service that allows you to connect with your friends and play online, Xbox Live Gold, has been eating wallets and making bank accounts cry. Now get ready to hurt even more since Xbox has now doubled the price of the service.

[UPDATE]

Microsoft has reversed their decision to increase the price of Xbox Live Gold:

“We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.”

As a result of this decision, free to play games such as Fortnite will no longer require Xbox Live Gold in order to play online.

In what seems like an attempt to push players towards a subscription for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, the price for Xbox Live Gold is now doubled to $120 yearly.

Here’s what that means for Xbox players:

  • If you’re an existing online 12-month or 6-month Xbox Live Gold member, there’s no price change. If you choose to renew your membership, it will renew at the current price.
  • The price of a 1-month Gold membership is increasing $1 USD and the price of a 3-month membership is increasing $5 USD or the equivalent amount in your local market.
  • If you’d like to upgrade your Gold membership to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate your remaining Gold time will also convert directly to Ultimate (up to 36 months). For example, if you have 11 months of Xbox Live Gold now, and you upgrade to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, those 11 months convert to 11 months of Ultimate at no additional cost.

This decision isn’t something that players are taking kindly too, as most already feel that the service is a rip-off. $60, let alone $120, just to play online with friends and a few free games a month? PC players don’t have to pay for this ability, so why should console players?

PlayStation also has a service just like Xbox Live Gold known as PS Plus, though there has been no update on any price increase for that service. What do you think about the Xbox Live Gold price being doubled? Are you going to continue to pay for the service or drop it like a hot potato?
