What’s the new Niantic Pikmin game?
Just yesterday, as is increasingly common with Nintendo lately, Nintendo and Niantic revealed a new collaborative project on their Twitter accounts. The series in question? Pikmin. So let’s find out just what this new Niantic Pikmin game is!
While not the most obvious series to make a mobile adaptation of, Pikmin makes a lot of sense in retrospect. The whole series is about exploring a Totally Not Earth as an alien the size of a quarter and fighting for survival with his legions of small plant based friends, the Pikmin. Making an AR type game would certainly work when the setting always has just been our planet.
The series has been somewhat dormant as of late, with its most recent releases of Hey Pikmin on the 3DS and Pikmin 3 Deluxe on Switch, a port of a 7 year old game.

What we know
What we know is… well, not much, admittedly. Really all we have are some tweets by Nintendo and Niantic individuals.
From these intro tweets, we know that this will be an augmented reality mobile game where it will “make walking more fun.” Finally, its been said that this will be a fairly different game from Pokemon GO, another collaboration between Nintendo and Niantic.
Speculation
And here is where most of the actual discussion is, as we know so little overall.
For one, I have to assume this is more than a simple walking simulator, as they want to make money off this endeavor. As such we can surmise there may be some types of minigames they can monetize or maybe overworld things similar to Pokestops or something.
Perhaps some element of the game will be collecting the various types of Pikmin, or using them for different purposes. In the main games they’re used to help Olimar travel around and carry items to make more Pikmin or complete objectives.
Maybe there would be items in places where Pokestops are that you have to have the Pikmin collect for in game goodies or something similar.

Really, it’s hard to say just what this new Niantic Pikmin game is, but as someone who likes the little series more than I should, I eagerly await its release!
