6th gen third-person shooters The Suffering and its sequel are set to be delisted by Warner Bros
Video game preservation is a hotly debated topic, with many titles being lost to time as publishers remove them from digital platforms while making no effort to keep them accessible by gamers both today and in the future. Two more titles are set to join the ever-growing list of titles that players can no longer access, with The Suffering and its sequel leaving digital platforms next month.
GOG took to its message board to announce that The Suffering and its sequel, The Suffering: Ties That Bind, are set to be delisted on September 1st saying,
“Per the publisher’s request both The Suffering and The Suffering: Ties That Bind will leave our store on September 1st (no exact hour yet). Grab the game before that if you’re interested. And as always, I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news.”
The Suffering was first released in 2004 on PS2, Xbox, and PC and gained an 80% score on Metacritic, with a sequel coming the following year. Despite both games being delisted on September 1st, neither have been put on sale by Warner Bros, with them both sitting at £8.09 to purchase. However, regional pricing does apply, with countries such as Russia and Armenia can purchase both for just $2.77.
It is a shame to see more games be delisted and lost with time, especially as there shouldn’t be any licensing issues due to The Suffering not being based on a movie or novel. However, a movie adaptation was reportedly in the works back in 2005 before being canceled. With society being entrenched in the digital world, this is something that we will continue to see over the coming years as more games are lost with time, even more so when games stop receiving physical releases at all.
