After making rounds on social media for a supposed teaser last month, Tekken 8 is officially revealed with its first trailer.

The next installment of the popular fighting game franchise was announced on Sony’s most recent State of Play. Featuring a father-and-son face-off between Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama, the footage looks like a pre-rendered cinematic trailer, which the franchise is known for.

However, according to a post on the Playstation blog, the trailer is an “actual real-time rendering of what is happening on the game screen.” The footage was reportedly taken directly from Tekken 8‘s story mode, which is still a work in progress, while playing the game on PS5.

“Although this was captured from the story mode, it is not a pre-rendered movie made for the trailer but rather real-time rendered footage, running at 60 frames per second, similar to how you would experience the game in versus battle modes,” says Katsuhiro Harada, the game producer, director, and general manager of Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Harada also says that plenty of exciting content can be expected from Tekken 8, but Bandai Namco chose to showcase the quality of the upcoming title in its first official trailer, clearly exhibiting its upgrade from the current Tekken 7.

“In the trailer, you can see this level of quality in the newly created playable character models that completely sets itself apart from the current Tekken 7, and in little details like how water droplets run down the character’s skin.

“Also, if you pay attention to the background during the battle, you can see dynamic waves and tornadoes, a huge tanker gradually breaking apart, storm rendering so realistic that you can feel the wind pressure and the rain’s density,” he added.

While the trailer already shows major improvements in terms of quality, Harada points out that Tekken 8 is still under development and that Bandai Namco is working hard to further enhance the game’s quality.

Tekken 8 was only announced for PS5 during the showcase. However, it was later revealed that the game would also be available for Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam. As of writing, its release date has not been revealed yet.
