Well, Nintendo always finds a way to be fashionably late to things, and I supposed a nearly three year wait is what I would consider fashionably late. Just yesterday, there was a Super Mario Party update which added Mario and Partner Party online support, the first real online play made available for the game that has been out for years.

What was added?

Before, Super Mario Party had a very, very lacking online play experience of only about ten minigames playable without the standard board game setting the series is known for. Suddenly, a free update was released yesterday morning which revamped the entire online system, or more accurately, added one. It does, however, require a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

As mentioned above, both the Mario Party and Partner Party game modes are now available online with friends or in password protected lobbies. Additionally, about 70/80 of the minigames can be played online, bringing the game much closer to what fans wanted from real Mario Party online. Something that can simulate that urge to beat up your friends when they steal a star.

While this may dash some hopes of a completely new Mario Party experience, this Super Mario Party update has certainly brought the game closer to what fans wanted originally. Sure, it took years to get there, but I suppose its better for the game to have gotten a second wind rather than die a sad death.

Fans seems to have similar opinions, glad that the game is, well, a real game now and sad it took as long as it did. Going based on my YouTube subscriptions alone, this definitely increased the interest in the game by an order of magnitudes, so hopefully Super Mario Party can last quite a while before Nintendo decides to make a new Mario Party.
