Sonic Voice Actor Exits Role After 10 Years

Roger Craig Smith as Sonic the Hedgehog

January 28th was a sad day for fans of Sonic the Hedgehog, at least in the western world. According to both Roger Craig Smith’s personal Twitter account, as well as the Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter, his time as the Sonic voice actor has come to a close after 10 long years.

As stated above, former Sonic voice actor, Roger Craig Smith, has been voicing the series’ mascot for over 10 years now, with his first appearances being in Sonic Free Riders as well as Sonic Colors, both released in 2010. He succeeded the role from prior Sonic actor, Jason Griffith, who had been voicing the mascot since the debut of the anime series Sonic X.

Many fans have shown in equal parts their disappointment of Roger Craig Smith’s departure from the role and their love for his performance during his 10 year gig as the blue blur. I myself love his work in both the game and TV series Sonic Boom, where his smooth, laid back delivery as well as perfectly in-character snark absolutely sells the best points of Sonic the Hedgehog.

However, this certainly doesn’t appear to be the end of Roger Craig Smith’s journey in voice acting. He’s played a number of important roles in television, anime, and games. Some examples include Ezio from Assassin’s Creed and Chris Redfield in the newer Resident Evil games.

Whatever his next endeavors may be, we wish him the best and appreciate all the work he did breathing new life into Sonic the Hedgehog! Who will take Smith’s place as the new Sonic voice actor, we wonder?
