Skyrim is coming to consoles for the umpteenth time

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is, by now, almost ten years old and it seemingly has never lost popularity in the Bethesda offices. I remember when it came out in 2011; when that reveal trailer dropped, my teenage self fell in love with the idea of being a sword-wielding, dragon-blasting, hero that absorbed the souls of giant dragons. The game came out and I enjoyed it when I eventually got my hands on it, but it never really stuck with me as much as other games have.

Since then, Skyrim has been re-released on every available console; from the Switch to the PS4, Skyrim has seen a renaissance in regards to accessibility. It’s practically impossible to miss Skyrim on any console and now more than ever, Skyrim has looked its best with its Special Edition that came out a while back on seventh-generation consoles. Since been re-released so many times, Bethesda’s insistence on having Skyrim on every conceivable console has become somewhat of a meme now. After Special Edition was generally agreed to be the best way to experience Skyrim, and after it made its way to the Nintendo Switch, we figured there’d be no more re-releases.

Oh, how wrong we were.

So, Bethesda announced something exciting for the millions of people that still play Skyrim on their console of choice. Skyrim Anniversary Edition, the supposed most definitive version of the game to date, has been slated for release on 11/11/21. This version of the game will have over 500 pieces of Bethesda Creation Club content, as well as new quests and dungeons that will be added as well. There will obviously be a new, full-priced version of Skyrim on shelves now, but also new goodies that will kind of justify the price of the re-release (emphasis on kind of though).

In addition to that, the Special Edition on the previous gen’s consoles will be receiving next-gen updates and other goodies like some extra quests and a new fishing feature, which are part of the Anniversary Edition. This update will also apply to the PC versions of Special Edition, with an opportunity to upgrade to Anniversary Edition at an extra cost. All this to just say that once again, Skyrim is back and is ready to be marginally different this time around, again.

Long live the Dovahkiin, for like, ever

Another year, another Skyrim release, and people are more than likely going to buy Anniversary Edition when it drops on November 11th. It seems like the meme of Skyrim being re-released will live on for a while longer; if there’s ever someone ballsy enough to create a console that could rival the current three available right now, you can bet that Skyrim would release there too.

If the new curated content that Bethesda is including in the Anniversary Edition is really substantial and the price to upgrade on PC isn’t egregious, then maybe it could be worth a look. For now, you’re probably better off modding the hell out of Skyrim Special Edition on your own time for similar results.

I swear, another couple of releases and it’ll give Resident Evil 4 a run for its money.
