Well, in response to the words of Croteam in the update: No, I did not see this coming. Serious Sam 2, something of the out-of-place stepchild of the series, just got hit with update 2.90.

Why is this a surprise? Well, Serious Sam 2 is a game from 2005, and its last actual update was around September 2016.

To make things even better for Serious Sam series fans, most of the games seem to be on sale on Steam currently with hefty discounts.

What’s in the update:

This is where the surprises really are – small patches and the like coming out at random years late isn’t entirely unheard of – uncommon, certainly, but not that rare.

But that isn’t what this update is.

This update, in actuality, is… quite considerable. While the full thing is available here, I’ll list some of the highlights below:

  • Sam can now obtain a brand new weapon called the Beamgun (“The Ghost Buster” from original Serious Sam design documents.
  • An enemy multiplier option is now available in both singleplayer and co-op.
  • 12 unreleased multiplayer maps have been added.
  • An entirely new Flame-thrower weapon has been made available to modders.
  • Sam can now Sprint.
  • Sam can also now rocket jump, as in previous games.
  • New Enemy, NPC and Objective Radar.
  • Sam is now able to dual wield all of his weapons.
    • “Sam finally learned to dual wield all of his toys.”

Other fixes / minor changes include:

  • A fix for a notorious profile corruption issues.
  • Rollerballs in the mission “The Road to Ursul” no longer self-destroying.
  • Uzis firing speed has been doubled – damage per bullet reduced from 10 to 9.
  • Statistics menu now shows correctly after skipping a movie.
  • “Colt Reloading has been added”

There are also a number of small visual changes and other more general changes, which I’ll leave out – if you’re interested, please check out the full changelog linked above these lists.

I’m not sure I’d call Serious Sam 2’s Update 2.90 a “little something”, but thank you Croteam.

The sale is definitely worth look for fans of power fantasy or otherwise chaotic horde shooter-style games.

Even the newest mainline entry in the series, Serious Sam 4, has taken a 40% price cut during this sale, so it’s definitely worth a look for those who’ve been waiting for a good chance.

And hey, even if you’ve never tried the series before at all, many of them are at prices around a few pounds/dollars – its an excellent time to try them out, though be quick as the sale ends in only a few days.
