Roger Craig Smith Returns as Sonic Voice

Roger Craig Smith as Sonic the Hedgehog

Earlier this week, Roger Craig Smith tweeted the reveal that he would be returning to the role as the voice actor for Sonic the Hedgehog. This came around the same time as SEGA’s announcement of a Sonic Showcase, which ended up with the reveals of a new 3D Sonic game, as well as a Colors remake. Needless to say, it’s been both a busy and welcome week for news regarding the Blue Blur.

This seems sort of surreal to me, as my very first article was about the mysterious stepping down of Roger Craig Smith as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog. In late January, both the Twitter accounts of Roger Craig Smith and of Sonic the Hedgehog announced his departure from the role after 10 years of voicing SEGA’s mascot.

No real answer was given at the time, so fans naturally went to speculation. Some theorized it may have just been an end of contract date, and that it would be reinstated for a following project. Others assumed that SEGA may have been trying to get the voice of the movie Sonic the Hedgehog, Ben Schwartz, to voice the character in future appearances for marketing.

Regardless of any theories, it evidently doesn’t matter much anymore. Roger Craig Smith is back in the role of the Blue Blur, and new projects have been shown off to give the franchise new life. Hopefully this means we’re in for a new era of Sonic that continues off the wave of enthusiasm Sonic Mania created. Something something, yes, Sonic has had a troubled history, but I think things can rebound for this series, and the return of an iconic voice is one good sign.
