2017s Resident Evil 7 saw the series a completely new direction. While it wasn’t Capcom’s first time dabbling in first person Resident Evil, the Survivor series ran from 2000-2003, followed by the Chronicles series from 2007-2009, it was their first time bringing first person to the mainline series.

Inspired by games such as Outlast, Amnesia, the first-person horror style was a big shift from the previous third-person action games of Resident Evil 4-6.

Resident Evil 7 Sales

Despite the shift from the usual style the RE series was known for, RE7 sold incredibly well, selling approximately 7.9 million copies by June 2020.

This made it the second best selling individual release by Capcom, losing the top spot to Monster Hunter World, as well as the best selling Resident Evil title.

RE7 VR

Resident Evil 7 was one of the first AAA titles to utilize VR, giving players the chance to experience the horror through Ethan’s eyes, and the results are even more terrifying.

The visuals weren’t as impressive when using VR, but it was on the PS4 so its understandable that sacrifices had to be made to maintain frame rate.

RE7 VR Reaches Huge Sales Record

It has been confirmed that RE7’s VR version has sold over 1 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best selling VR titles.

As of June 2020, there had been 5 million PSVR headsets sold, meaning that approximately 1 in 5 owners also owned RE7 VR, a really impressive number.

With the success of RE7 VR, and the advancement in GPU tech, along with the next generation of consoles, could we see Resident Evil 8 VR in the future?
