Overwatch 2 was released on October 4. The game met with users with deleted accounts, players unable to log in, and a confirmed DDoS attack.

After much hype and anticipation, the release of Overwatch 2 culminated with tweets about players losing their accounts, people waiting for hours in the queue, and a “mass DDoS attack on their servers.

This has happened despite the early preparation of Blizzard in the transition of their servers from the original to Overwatch 2. The move to make the game free-to-play may have impacted the game more than the developers expected.

Overwatch 2 under DDoS attack

Mike Ybarra, Blizzard president, recently tweeted that the Overwatch 2 servers are currently undergoing distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. In short, excessive and likely malicious numbers of requests overwhelming the server. If you are currently unable to log in, you just have to join the player queue and wait.

Tens of thousands of players are reporting an incredibly long wait time for them to be able to log in to the recently released Overwatch 2. Unfortunately, people waiting for their turn with the overwhelmed servers are not given an ETA as to when they can expect to play the game.

Another issue seems to start when players use their phone numbers as part of the authentication process of the game. Most of the complaints come from players that are using pre-paid phones. They will either be stuck in a loop of SMS authentication or not be able to get any messages at all.

Lost accounts and “Merge Accounts Not Working” error

The “Merge Accounts Not Working” error is a bug that players of Overwatch 2 have been complaining about even before the official release of the game. The error has caused an uproar among the players of the original game title especially since it might be possible that they have lost their account.

For those that are lucky enough to be able to log in, there are still hurdles that they will have to go through. Players are complaining that they appear to be using a completely new account. This is despite the promise of Blizzard that veteran players of the game will have their original accounts also transition to their new account in Overwatch 2.

This means that all those skins, items, and other cosmetics that players have been able to unlock on the original Overwatch did not transition successfully to the new game instalment. According to a recent post by Blizzard, they are aware of the issue and are looking for ways to resolve the matter.
