After much speculation, it has been confirmed that the upcoming Mortal Kombat 12 will take players back in time again and be branded as Mortal Kombat 1.

This marks the second time that the series has been rebooted, having done so in 2011’s Mortal Kombat just three games ago.

WB Games and Netherealm Studios have now released the first trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 and it is just as bloody and gory as ever.

Despite being a reboot, Mortal Kombat 1 is similar to Mortal Kombat (2011) in that it seems to be aware of the fact it’s a reboot and has gone back in time.

At the end of Mortal Kombat 11, Liu Kang became a God and in the trailer, he is still a God despite going back in time, he also mentions in the voice-over that “Its time to wake up to a new reality,” indicating it was Kang that took the world and characters back in time.

Netherealm Studios wasted no time in establishing that many of the key characters in the franchise will be returning. In the trailer, we get to see Raiden, Kung Lao, Katana, Mileena, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Shang Tsung.

Speaking of the sorcerer, players that pre-order Mortal Kombat 1 will receive Shang Tsung as a bonus character as well as beta access for PS5 and Xbox Series X owners. Pre-orders will go live from May 19, 2023, at 10 am PT/1 pm EST/6 pm BST.
