The highly popular Minecraft is back in the news again, only this time, it’s far from positive. As the new Minecraft chat reporting system enters multiplayer gameplay, it has caused nothing but chaos amongst the community.

Minecraft recently introduced a series of updates, that now allows players to report chat messages in multiplayer games. But why is this such a problem?

Let’s take a look at everything we know at present about the Minecraft chat reporting system and Mojangs response to the outcry of their community over this feature.

What is the Minecraft Chat Reporting System?

The new features were implemented in Minecraft a month ago, in a pre-release version of update 1.19.1. However players quickly realised this is a concern.

Due to the realtime ability to be able to report chat content, players are concerned that the Minecraft chat reporting feature can be very easily abused, resulting in unnecessary bans.

As a result, server hosts are now incredibly wary of banning players from their servers. Servers and their hosts can now be reported several times, by the same person, and from different accounts… resulting in an instant account ban.

Once an account receives a ban, players are then restricted from accessing multiplayer game modes, which also includes their own servers, meaning players can only access single-player mode as a result of any ban they may incur.

Mojang have released the following statement to their community about the Minecraft chat reporting system, after the official launch of update 1.19.1.

‘Hi there, everyone. With this RC release, we wanted to reach out and address two things.First, we know that there has been pushback to the player reporting system that is being introduced in this next update. We appreciate and value your feedback, but it does not mean that feedback will always change the design principles Mojang Studios adheres to — this includes the upcoming reporting system.

Second, while we understand this may not be the answer some of you were hoping for, we are not planning on changing it. There have been some folks following Mojang employees around here on Reddit, responding to unrelated posts from them and commenting about this system.

Please understand that this behavior does not encourage employees to reach out to the community, nor will it bring about the changes you’re wanting. If you feel strongly about something in Minecraft, please tell us in the appropriate locations (such as these threads) because we want to hear what you have to say! However, harassment does not help anyone: not the devs who receive it, nor the players who are passionate about an upcoming change. We want to maintain a constructive and open dialogue with you, and this kind of behavior inhibits that’

Players have been left outraged by this, in what is seen as an abuse of the system. It is deemed unfair to allow players the ability to abuse such a feature, resulting in seriously unfair gameplay for those on the receiving end of unnecessary bans.

Will Mojang reverse their decision about the new Minecraft chat reporting system and listen to their community? How will these new changes be moderated to try and prevent unfair gameplay? If a player receives a ban, how long will it take for the ban to be removed after an appeal has been made? Be sure to stay tuned as we release more information as it becomes available.
