Is the best Mario Spin-Off getting a Switch sequel?

This is one of those “Huge Pinch of Salt” moments, but Mario Strikers could be getting a Nintendo Switch Sequel at some point in the next two years. If you don’t know what this title is… Then, frankly, you’re missing out. It is insane.

Super Mario Strikers, which released on the Nintendo Gamecube in 2005, and Mario Strikers Charged, which released on the Nintendo Wii in 2007, are some of the least-appreciated Mario titles out there at the moment. Much like Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour and Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Strikers is a sport-based series and it brings the much-loved sport of football/soccer to our favorite Nintendo Characters.

Like every other Mario spin-off title, Mario Strikers games featured all the main Mario ensemble characters and a few of our favorite “minions” too. Koopa Troopa, Hammer Bros, Shy Guys… You can build your squad out of all your favourites and Toad.

(Okay, that sounds harsh but Toad is actually a f*cking legend in Mario Strikers Charged.)

Mario Strikers is a fast-paced soccer title that features all the charm of a Mario game and all the edge-of-your-seat action of a soccer game. It really is a match made in heaven!

One feature that makes it truly epic is the “Mega Strike”. When you charge up the football enough, through passing it between your players, you can unleash a super-powered shot on goal that is buried in the back of the net. It adds a degree of strategy to an otherwise simple title that’s only real obstacles are the classic array of Banana Peels and Shells.

As a party game, it’s one of the best out there (as proved by the football mini-game on Super Mario Party) and we think the Nintendo Switch’s hybrid design of being a handheld console and a docked home console would make it perfect for an expansion of this title.

Roselina, Bowser Jr, King Boo and Roy could all make for fantastic new “Captains” and we’re sure there’s going to be a few newer minions everyone wants to see included. For starters, shouldn’t Toad really be more than a minion at this point? If there’s any cause for celebration it’s Toad’s acension into the “Mario Character” ranks.
