God of War Ragnarok finally shows new gameplay footage

2018’s God of War was a pleasant surprise for anyone that is familiar with the original series of games. Kratos had gone from bloodthirsty, god-slaying, sex beast to grumpy old dad that is learning how not to be as grumpy. Since then, we’ve had only snippets of information here and there about a sequel, especially with that stinger at the end of the new reboot. Gamers have been hungering for a new entry in this new series and it seems like Sony finally has a bone to throw gamers. Some detailed God of War: Ragnarok footage.

The return of Dad-Kratos

In today’s PlayStation Showcase, we got a look at many games to get excited for, with God of War: Ragnarok rounding out the stream with plenty to see. The game picks up from the ending of the 2018 entry, this time with an older Atreus and even grumpier Kratos deciding how to tackle their date with destiny. Prophecies, decapitated heads, crazy Norse powers, and the trademark savagery of Kratos’ combat style are all present and accounted for.

The combat is still bombastic and vicious, as we still get to mix attacks between the Blades of Chaos and the Leviathan Axe; in addition to the familiar combat, there seems to be a subtle increase in enemies on screen. Atreus gets a couple of new magic spells to play with, as you can see him riding what looks to be a white, mythical oryx. In addition to the slick gameplay, we get some newcomers in the mix of the reboot’s fantastic cast, like the enigmatic Thor, who featured in the stinger of the first game.

While it’s exciting to see something of the next game, God of War: Ragnarok won’t be arriving on PlayStation consoles until 2022. Don’t hold your breath for that tenuous date, however; given the track record of anticipated AAA games, there’s a definite possibility of a delay. Hell, this game has been delayed alredy (albiet for good reason). We’ve got plenty to play until then though, so just keep expectations in check.

More than likely the best way to experience this game will be on the PS5, so go out and try to grab one if you can. If you’re still stuck with your old PS4 though, it’s safe to assume that the PS4 version of God of War: Ragnarok will work just fine. Sharpen those Axes for 2022 (hopefully).
