Genshin Impact 3rd highest grossing mobile game

Two years after the release of the massive hit, Genshin Impact has amassed an aggregated revenue of $3.7 billion, making it the 3rd highest globally.

According to a recently released chart from Sensor Tower, a digital market analytics company, Genshin Impact remains the 3rd highest-grossing mobile game globally. The only two games standing above it are PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) Mobile, which has accumulated $4.9 billion in the past two years, and Honor of Kings, which has picked up $5.5 billion. The game titles are sitting at number 2 and number 1, respectively. Both games are also from the same gaming giant, Tencent Games.

Genshin Impact was released on September 28, 2020, and is recently celebrating its 2nd anniversary. The game is being developed and maintained by miHoYo and Shanghai Miha Touring Film Technology Co., Ltd.

The Global Player Spending in Genshin Impact

The report from Sensor Tower indicated that it does not include the revenue from third-party Android stores in China and other regions. However, outside of China, the game has ranked 2nd in mobile game player spending. It has earned a total of $2.5 billion internationally from both the App Store and Google Play. It has superseded the classic Candy Crush Saga at No. 3 with $2.3 billion in revenue. The game was developed by King. Sitting at the top is Roblox from Roblox Corporation with $2.5 billion.

From the players’ perspective, the biggest difference between Genshin Impact and the top competitors is that it has established itself as a gacha game.

In the list of games that use gacha monetization to gain revenue, Sensor Tower confirmed that the game has been standing strong as the top revenue-generating mobile title worldwide for the past two years. Below it is Rise of Kingdoms with $1.7 billion and Three Kingdoms Strategic with $1.7 billion. The game titles are sitting at number two and number three, respectively.

Some of the reasons behind the success of MiHoYo’s Genshin Impact can be attributed to many factors. For one, it had the biggest global launch of any Chinese game with over 21 million pre-registrations as it maximized the possibility of gaining players through the cross-platform. It was available for PC, PS4, and mobile devices during its release. According to the same report from Sensor Tower, the game has been downloaded a total of 17 million times in the mobile version alone.

According to the second graph from Sensor Tower titled Genshin Impact Global Player Spending by Quarter, the second quarter of 2021 was the lowest the game has ever seen in terms of revenue. It fell by more than $150 million from quarter 1 to quarter 2 of 2021. After that, the game had its highest aggregated revenue, almost doubling the revenue from the second quarter to the third quarter of 2021.

The same report mentioned that China consistently ranked number 1 in the market for player spending in the game’s mobile version in its first two years. In that country alone, the game generated $1.2 billion, or approximately 33% of the total revenue with just iOS and trusted Android stores outside China. The second highest paying players are in Japan. The country makes up about 24% of the company’s revenue. A little behind is the United States sitting as the third highest paying player at 17%.

Genshin Impact is an action role-playing game developed by miHoyo, also known as HoYoverse. The game is available for PC, PS4, PS5, iOS, and Android, while a release on Nintendo Switch is currently in the works.
