Death Stranding Director’s Cut announced

Death Stranding was the most anticipated game of the last console generation, so it’s no surprise that Kojima Productions announced a Director’s Cut in the works.

For the uninitiated (or uninterested) Death Stranding was one of the best walking simulators to ever come out for a modern console; you played as Sam “Porter” Bridges, a man pulled into an epic quest to reform and reforge the shattered United States of America.

The game was an open-world walking simulator, as in actually making the player feel what it’d be like if you were to walk up and down mountains for several days at a time. Terrain, elevation, and distance played a major role in how your missions played out, as you’d have to make sure you were able to reach your destination unscathed.

A myriad of enemies, which include rouge humans and strange entities called BTs were what stood between you and successfully delivering your packages.

Some players enjoyed this different kind of game, as it emphasized planning your journey and adjusting to any unforeseen threats along the way, while others didn’t find the methodical gameplay all that compelling.

Despite opinions being so split, the game sold well and has many fans. Death Stranding Director’s Cut seems like an inevitability in hindsight.

The trailer doesn’t show too much other than a facility where Sam is infiltrating, an unsubtle Metal Gear reference, and not much else. According to the trailer, the footage on display is PS5 gameplay, and it’s definitely looking really nice. Death Stranding Director’s Cut can definitely be a marked improvement over the original by simply running significantly better.

Given Kojima’s penchant for being a perfectionist, however, it wouldn’t surprise me if the Director’s Cut came with a lot more than just a technical upgrade. We’ll have to wait and see.
