Cyberpunk 2077 just hit its highest player count on Steam since January 2021. Current players hit almost 70,000 according to Steam top games.

A new entry in the top 10 Steam games just entered the scene. Cyberpunk 2077 is now officially breaking its records since it was released in December 2020. This success is highly attributed to the recent developments in the game. A recent patch update named Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was used as a promotion for the anime. The latest patch update has been activated on September 6th while the anime series was released on September 13th.

This is a leap from when the game was launched. To say the least, it has been a rollercoaster for CD Projekt Red, the game developer of Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk started on a rocky road

The launch of the game was welcomed with a string of bugs and glitches, most commonly complained about by console users such as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The grievances were buzzing around various social media platforms. IT went so far that CD Projekt Red went to the length of offering refunds for any dissatisfied players. To add salt to the wound, just a week after its release, the game was removed by Sony from its list of games together with the promise of a refund.

The following week, CD Projekt Red gave their word to players that they would “bring Cyberpunk 2077 back to PlayStation Store as soon as possible“. The game developer continued to provide updates to both physical and digital PlayStation 4 versions of the game.

Following our discussion with PlayStation, a decision was made to temporarily suspend digital distribution of Cyberpunk 2077 on PlayStation Store. You can still buy physical versions of the game in brick and mortar stores and online. All purchased digital and physical copies of the game will continue to receive support and updates as we continue to improve your experience.

Cyberpunk 2077 comes back to life

After their blunder, the game was put back on Sony’s list back on June 21, 2021. There were multiple disclaimers placed, including warnings of the game best running on PlayStation Pro and PlayStation 5. However, CD Projekt Red never gave up on the IP. Even after it was put back by Sony, the developers continued to update the game.

On February 15, 2022, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of the game were released. This marked the end of the updates they did for the previous PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game.

It was in the middle of this year when the game started to hit it off. More videos were being posted on Youtube and fewer bugs and glitches were reported by players.

Cyberpunk 2077 hits top 10

This past weekend is perhaps the biggest number of concurrent players the game has seen for a while. The last count was that the game peaked at around 80,000 concurrent players at some point after their patch 1.6 release. The game continues to show traction, especially after the hit anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.

Comparing this to how it was on during its launch, CD Projekt Red still has a long way to go to redeem itself. According to Steamcharts, the game peaked at around 830,000 players when it was launched in December 2020.

The question now is, how well can CD Projekt Red continue the momentum to gain the full trust of their players again?

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Google Stadia.
