The Witcher franchise has become one of the most beloved gaming IPs, with The Witcher 3 being one of the most decorated games of all time in terms of awards won.

It has also spawned many spin-offs in other forms of media including a very successful Netflix series, which became one of the most-watched shows on the streaming platform.

Today, CD Projekt Red has announced the next entry in The Witcher franchise, with the tagline “A New Saga Begins.”

In a blog post, CD Projekt Red announced the new game, which will see the studio move from their own REDengine to the brand new Unreal Engine 5, starting a multi-year strategic partnership with Epic Games, with both studios using this partnership to help the technical development of Unreal Engine 5.

Unreal Engine 5 has yet to see any major titles released on it, with just Epic Games’ own Fortnite moving to the engine, and the Matrix tech demo for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S released using it. This makes The Witcher one of the few games being acknowledged to be developed on the engine, however by the time the game is released there will likely be hundreds of games utilizing the power of Unreal Engine 5.

As of right now, no details have been given regarding the game, such as the development time frame, release date, or even a game name.

It is worth noting that REDengine will continue to be used to develop and release future Cyberpunk 2077 expansions.

With the promo image released not specifically saying “The Witcher 4” it does seem like this will be a soft reboot of the IP and the game could simply be known as The Witcher.

This would make sense as the series didn’t hit major mainstream success until The Witcher 3, so starting fresh with its newfound popularity could be the best move as it could help draw fans of the Netflix show in too, without them feeling like they’ve missed out on too much by not playing the first three games.

With The Witcher just being announced, and given how long it takes for CD Projekt Red to develop games, it is likely that we won’t see the release of the game for a very long time.
