The next generation is in full swing and as time goes on we can expect to see the quality of games improve dramatically as developers unlock the potential of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Holiday 2021 will be the first holiday season in which the next-gen systems will be front and centre. The consoles released in November 2020, but the early beginnings of a new generation is always rocky due to developers learning the new systems and also supporting the previous generation.

Battlefield 6, or whatever it will be called, will be the first game in the series to be developed for the new consoles and, from what we heard today, it should take full advantage of the extra horsepower.

In a Q3 earnings conference call, EA laid out new details for what we can expect from Battlefield 6 later this year.

Here is a quote from that call,

“We’re looking forward to sharing a lot more about our FY22 plan in the months ahead, including our next Battlefield experience, which will mark a return to all-out military warfare. The game takes full advantage of the power of next-generation platforms to bring massive and immersive battles to life with more players than ever before. Featuring maps with unprecedented scale, the next vision of Battlefield takes all the destruction, player agency, and vehicle and weapon combat that the franchise is known for and elevates it to another level. The team is focused, and the game is ahead of our internal milestones. We will reveal the game in the spring and deliver the defining Battlefield experience for our players in the 2021 holiday season.”

With EA wanting to take full advantage of the next-gen hardware, it is unclear whether a last-gen version will be released for the PS4/Xbox One. Currently Battlefield sees up to 64 players duke it out in 32v32 matches. With EA wanting to add more players than ever before, it is likely we will see 64v64, doubling the amount of players. This could be incredibly difficult for the last-gen consoles to handle. And with cross-platform being standard nowadays, it seems unlikely that EA would want to cut the last-gen players off from the PS5/Xbox Series X|S players.

Battlefield 6 is set to be revealed in the Spring with a release window of Holiday 2021, likely October or November 2021.
