Animal Crossing: New Horizons now Japan’s all-time best-selling game, tops original Pokémon titles
Animal Crossing: New Horizons has reportedly sold 10.45 million copies in Japan since it was released in March 2020 and has become Japan’s all-time best-selling game.
This information was shared by Games Data Library, a site that collects Japanese game sales data. According to the data shared by the site on Twitter, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has topped Pokémon titles, including Pokémon Red/Blue/Green which has been in first place for the longest time.

The tweet also details the sales of the games with Animal Crossing: New Horizons having 10.45 million sold copies as mentioned earlier. This is followed by Pokémon Red/Blue/Green with 10.23 million sales and Pokémon Gold/Silver in the third spot with 7.17 million sales. Other games that made it to the Top 5 were Super Mario Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons tops Japan’s all-time best-selling games list in just two years
It is worth noting that the three games following the top 1 on Game Data Library’s list were released more than 20 years ago. This shows how rapid New Horizons‘ success has been in just over two years.
With its current Metascore of 90 on Metacritic, it’s clear that the Animal Crossing title has cemented itself as one of the best social simulation games of this generation.

Another noteworthy title on the list in terms of recent releases is Splatoon 3. It can be recalled that this third-person shooter video game was released in September of this year. Despite being released just recently, it has already made its way into the list of Japan’s all-time best-selling games.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a social simulation game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. Released in 2020, the title is the fifth main entry in the Animal Crossing franchise.
