If you’ve seen one of these unusual creatures in Deep Rock Galactic before, you might have been wondering – precisely what is a Huuli Hoarder?

What is a Huuli Hoarder?

Huuli Hoarders are a rare neutral creature in Deep Rock Galactic that can be killed for vast sums of local minerals – if you spot them before they spot you at least, because they run away very quickly if the player approaches them.

If it happens to be in a dark area, you won’t see much of them. Just a few yellowish lights across its body show up at range. But approach it and it’ll make loud screaming sounds and run away as fast as it can manage, quickly confirming it as a Huuli Hoarder. If you think you’ve got one on your hands, devise a plan quickly – they run a short distance away and then burrow into the rock, leaving the mission in the process.

Now that we’ve covered exactly what is a Huuli Hoarder, let’s talk about its value. Are they actually worth the effort to try to kill in time?

They do leave very quickly once they’ve noticed you close to them, and depending on where precisely it is and how quickly you can get to it, killing one can be a very ammo-consuming affair. As long as it is being shot at all, it won’t be able to burrow though, so even guns that are ineffective at range can help buy you time to get close enough to kill it.

Some guns such as the Engineer weapon shown above can stun it on-hit thanks to upgrades. These tend to be weapons with very limited ammo though, and that are normally reserved for stronger creatures. Raising the question of just how worthwhile killing them can be if you’re going to need a resupply pod afterwards.

Fortunately enough, I did manage to kill this one as it turned up right at the start of the mission, and here’s the kind of reward you can expect to see.

Pretty much all of the drops fell into the original drop pod crater. As veteran miners may be able to distinguish, the Huuli dropped both gold and Nitra, as well as local minerals including Enor Pearls – enough to pretty much fill my inventory entirely and require me to call over Molly the mule to clean up. Of course, Veteran miners aren’t as likely to be wondering what is a Huuli Hoarder, so you might well not be able to identify minerals at range like this already.

These drops make them pretty worthwhile even if they are awkward to kill, given that the Nitra alone will help pay you back for the ammo spent through resupply pods. The dropped gold increases your mission paycheck, and the local minerals such as Enor Pearls in this case can be incredibly useful when gathered in mass like this to skip a great deal of farming when you need them for something you want later.

Hopefully, this has helped answer our starting question of what is a Huuli Hoarder for you, as well as if they’re actually worth the effort to chase down; I certainly think so. You might have different opinions depending on your hazard settings, as chasing them can certainly make missions more chaotic, and you might not have time for that on the higher difficulty settings.
