The latest Steam trend that has garnered PC gamers’ interest is the multiplayer co-op survival game Valheim. Ever wanted to live in the Viking age with up to 10 of your friends, doing Viking things? Even if you didn’t, you now can by getting in on the early access program of this Viking-themed extravaganza.

Before you can hop in to a game with your friends, however, you will need to set up a local server.

This enables you to host a game world locally on your computer and is ideal for when you’re playing with a dedicated group of friends who play together at the same time. There is a way to host a dedicated server, but that requires a good PC that can handle the load of running a server and a stable internet connection.

How To Set-Up a Co-Op Server?

In order to set up a local Valheim multiplayer co-op server, you need to first create your character. Once that is done, you will be met with a menu screen with the tabs “Start Game” and “Join Game”.

Click on Start Game (you should be on it by default), and then click New. It will open a pop-up box where you can type in a name for the world you and your friends will be playing in and an option for including a world seed.

Those who are familiar with Minecraft will know what a seed is. It is essentially a code that corresponds to a specific setup of the world, which is otherwise randomized. If there is a specific seed you want your world to have, simply paste the seed in the respective box. If not, you don’t need to touch that section at all.

Once you have created a world, it will show up in the menu box under Start Game. Now, before you click the big Start button, make sure you have “Start Server” checked. This is important because if you leave this unchecked and start the game, you will be in an unjoinable world all by yourself.

You can also make a Community Server that is listed publicly in the Join Game tab. This is if you want to open the server to the public and have random people join your game.

However, if you want to play only with your friends, you want to create the server with the Start Server option selected. Add a password to it if you want, and then click Start.

That’s it! You can simply press shift+tab and invite your friends manually, or have them join you by asking them to click the Join Game tab, selecting “Friends” and then clicking refresh until your world shows up for them.
