Valheim has skyrocketed in popularity recently, which means there will be new players coming into the game each day. The game has already sold 2 million copies on Steam in about two weeks, so you could definitely say this is the game to be playing right now. And if you are one of those new players to Valheim, you might be wondering how you can start to plant the many seeds you’ve picked up.

The process of planting seeds is relatively quick to learn and shouldn’t take too long for new players to pick up.

Before you can plant seeds, you will of course need to first find these seeds. There are three different kinds in the game, and they can be found at different locations:

  • Beech Seed: Found in the Meadows by cutting down Beech trees
  • Turnip Seed: Found in the Swamp by harvesting the Turnip flower
  • Carrot Seed: Found in the Black Forest

These seeds can be planted and used to eat later. The only seed that is not intended for this usage is the Ancient Seed. These can either be found in chests, through destroying a Greydwarf Spawner or can be dropped by Greydwarf Brutes and Greydwarf Shamans. This seed is used to summon the Elder, and not to be used for farming.

You should be able to find each seed easily and you will really only need a Stone Ax to get Beech seeds, while Carrot seeds and Turnip seeds can be obtained without needing an item.

What You Need to Plant Seeds

After you have found your seeds, you will need a few things before you can plant them. In order to plant seeds, you will need to get a Cultivator. In order to make a Cultivator, you will need to have already built a Forge, which becomes available to you once you get copper.

Once you have a Forge, you can begin creating a Cultivator once you have obtained Bronze, which can be made by crafting 2 Copper and 1 Tin at a Forge. Finally, you can begin your process of making a Cultivator using these items:

  • x5 Core Wood
  • x5 Copper

Core wood can be found in the Black Forest from Pine Trees and can be obtained through using a Flint Ax or Stone Ax. A Flint Ax is recommended, though, as it will be quicker than the Stone Ax. It is important to note that beginner players should especially be careful in the Black Forest and go during the day. There are many creatures here that could easily kill you if you aren’t prepared.

Now that you have obtained seeds and made your Cultivator, it’s now time to actually plant the seeds.

You will first need to find an area that you plan to turn into a farm. This can be pretty much anywhere in a grassy area that you would like to use. Once you have that, you can follow these easy steps:

  • Equip your Cultivator and start turning the grass into soil.
  • Keep your Cultivator equipped and right-click to open the menu, and select the seed you want to plant.
  • Click the soil to plant the seed.

And that’s it! Not too complicated, but definitely requires some adventuring a bit in the game before you can make the Cultivator and start planting those seeds. But it is all worth the time and effort for an amazing game like Valheim!
