Pokemon Sword and Shield: Grookey

The Nintendo Switch exclusive Pokemon Sword and Shield games include some very cool starters including the adorable Grookey! So what do you need to know about him?

What is Grookey?

Grookey is the Grass type Pokemon Sword and Shield starter. It is strong against Water, Ground, and Rock type Pokemon, though it is also weak against Fire, Ice, Poison, Flying, and Bug types.

Its design is similar to that of a squirrel monkey or a macaque. Grookey’s behavior may also reference the fact that macaques “drum objects in a rhythmic manner to show social dominance.” Its stick-like tool resembles drumsticks as well as hair sticks which may also take inspiration from the belief that music can stimulate plant growth.

Grookey’s second evolution – Thwackey’s first and only evolution – is available when Thwackey reaches level 35 and is then able to be evolved into Rillaboom – the final evolution of Pokemon Sword/Shield starter, Grookey.
