Overwatch 2: How to merge accounts

Overwatch 2

The transition from the original Overwatch to Overwatch 2 is now underway. If you’ve encountered a “Merge Accounts Not Working” error during that process, you’re not alone.

To start, a Blizzard post in their web forum has confirmed that this is something that they are already aware of and are currently working on. The post mentioned “Some players who merged their PC and console accounts are seeing an “Unexpected Server Error”. in addition, it mentions “Some cosmetics, items, and currency that players own are not showing up in their collections”. This means that a majority of what you might be experiencing is rooted in a server issue.

However, it is important to know if you have truly exhausted all the options to address this on the player side. There have been reports of the error being caused by the players themselves.

How to merge accounts in Overwatch 2

First, a quick disclaimer: This process will not work if you are using two consoles of the same platform (for example: you are using 2 PlayStation consoles at the same time). This is a rare scenario, but make sure that you are only using one PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch. If you do have more than one console of the same platform, you will have to choose which device will have your merged account.

  1. Once you have chosen the device, load Overwatch 2 on your console.
  2. After it opens, go to ‘Options‘.
  3. Scroll down and look for ‘Link account‘.
  4. The screen will provide you a QR code, use your mobile device to scan it.
  5. After your mobile device scans the code, you will be asked to either login or create a new Battle.net account.
  6. Once you log in, you will need to back to the main menu and look for ‘Account Merge’.
  7. It will pull up both of your accounts. After double-checking details are correct, confirm the merge.
  8. Repeat the same process for other consoles or platforms where you plan to play Overwatch 2.

If the merge was successful and you decide to unmerge the accounts, take note that this will also remove the account from your device and all progress that you still have in that account. Aside from that, unmerging accounts will also cause the server to block your account from merging for an entire year. Unmerging accounts should always be the last resort for all players.

Alternatives to merging accounts and other issues

If one of your concerns involves the issue with the SMS not pushing through when you use your mobile phone, double-check your contact number and then try again. If the issue persists and you have another phone, you can try another mobile device and check if that would works instead. Take note that if you have multiple Battle.net accounts that are sharing the same number, log in directly to that website first and then change the contact number on your account.

“SMS protect – Using a number that is already in use on another account can leave the client in an unusable state. If you encounter this, close the title, log into the affected http://battle.net/ account via web browser and change the number to one that is unique.”

Blizzard

If a player is still not able to log in successfully, according to Blizzard, the player needs to report the matter as it might help the developers in figuring out what caused the issue and any trends relating to the error. It could be under a specific console or they could isolate it as and get your account back. Players can reach out to have their concerns raised through the Blizzard Support website.
