How to Play The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind With a Controller on PC

How can you play The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind with a controller? Well, you may have heard that The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is going to arrive to the Xbox Game Pass following the acquisition of Bethesda by Microsoft. For your average PC gamer, this probably won’t be too relevant for you, seeing as how you probably bought it ages ago but forgot all about it.

Maybe it was the age of the game, or maybe it was the fact that you couldn’t play it with a controller like you can on the Xbox. That can change however. There’s a way you can revisit the game easily with controller support.

You can with an engine called OpenMW. You do have to own the actual game before anything though, so pop on over to Steam or GOG and buy a copy.

Afterward, it’s a simple matter of going to the OpenMW website and downloading the engine. Installation is incredibly straightforward, and shouldn’t take longer than a couple of minutes.

All you have to do start the executable and direct the engine to your Morrowind installation folder when prompted. Really simple right? You can now play Morrowind on a stable engine with an Xbox controller. The only issue is that there are no Xbox prompts on the screen, which can be disorienting for some.

If you plan on playing this game at a higher resolution, you may want to configure the settings file in the engine’s directory. On a 4K TV, the game’s menus and text boxes will seem incredibly small and hard to see.

Definitely not ideal if you’re planning on playing while on your couch. Tweaking the GUI command line is as simple as changing the scaling factor from 1.0 to something higher.

As the wait for next Elder Scrolls grows longer, it’s the best time to revisit the more notable entries in the series. In addition to Morrowind, Daggerfall has received similar treatment by the way of Daggerfall Unity.

While it requires some more setup, it too plays nicely on a controller. These methods aren’t perfect, but they’re being constantly updated, and are still great ways experience these older entries before The Elder Scrolls VI drops (eventually).
