Well, its been a little over 12 hours since Pyra/Mythra have been officially added to Smash Ultimate, and I, as well as people far more skilled than I, have finally gotten a chance to play around with the dynamic duo. Want to know how to play Pyra/Mythra? I got you covered!

… At least until pros optimize the character to an insane degree. But! As an entry level guide, this should suffice.

First of all, one needs to look at the two separately. With Pyra being listed first, I’ll suitably look at her first. The two shares a number of the same moves, though Pyra’s are slower and laggier, but have more range and do a ton more damage and knockback. You won’t be able to combo much as Pyra, as most of her attacks will be sort of “get of me” type of moves or killing blows.

Her Up B move is a fantastic quick out of shield option that can kill lighter characters off the top around 80-90%, so at 100-110%, its a nigh guarenteed kill if you can land the move. Note however if someone predicts it, you’ll be left wide open. Her Side B is a decent non committal projectile which is great at trapping opponents as they try to recover as it remains stationary for about a second and reaches below the stage. Her B move is a chargeable move that attacks in front and behind her and is great at both dealing damage and killing, but it is predictable.

Mythra, on the other hand, is notably more nimble. Her damage is notably lower but she can reliably combo other characters and her speed is nothing to sneeze at. She can fire off her low committal tilt attacks quickly and without much fear of retaliation. She feels like the character one wants to be in for the duration of the match, using her speed and combos to outmaneuver and punish opponents.

Mythra’s B moves are a bit different. Her B move is similar to Pyra’s, and is a good percent racker and decent kill move for Mythra, though it only attacks in front of her. Her Side B is a useful recovery tool and mix-up option, as well as high damage dealer, but is easily defended against, so don’t go wild. Her Up B is another decently useful out of shield option, though its strength comes in poking the opponent off-stage, as Mythra has no other projectile.

Now that the main differences have been discussed, let’s get to how one would play these two in a real match. It seems most agree that starting with Mythra is preferred. At low percents many of her attacks combo into one another, and her speed and lower weight prevent her from being combo’d as easily as her counterpart. Once the opponent is at about 80% or higher, switching to Pyra nearly guarantees a kill in the next 2-3 hits, and she does better at covering the opponent’s recovery and ledge options.

Pyra is also preferable to play at high percents, as she weighs 6 units above Mythra, meaning she won’t be KO’d as easily. If you really can’t net the kill as Pyra, Mythra can use her down tilt into up smash fairly reliably to kill lightweights off the top, and her forward airs can carry an opponent off stage.

The two cover each other’s weaknesses surprisingly well, and the only real flaw I see with them is a potential inability to kill players who can outmaneuver Pyra. They really do feel like a well balanced high tier fighter, though this is all analysis done after less than a full day of play. Obviously, test the character yourself and see how the pros can bring this new character to their greatest heights before coming to early conclusions.
