Stairs are one of the more basic bits of furnishing you can add to improve a home, so here’s how you can make your own stairs in Terraria.

How to make stairs in Terraria

To make stairs in Terraria, you’ll need some platform blocks and any kind of hammer. Hit the platforms with the hammer after placing to adjust them into a staircase shape.

For a more in-depth summary, continue on.

For the sake of this guide, I’ll be using wood platforms as the materials are incredibly easy to gather. These platforms can be made at the basic crafting table using just wood. You can use most if not all other types of platforms with this method, they will be functionally identical and simply appear different.

With your platform choice made, you’ll need a hammer of any type. Again, I’ll be using a wooden hammer, which you can craft using the basic workbench using only wood. Feel free to knock yourself out if you want to use something more advanced, it should work just the same.

With your hammer now in hand, you adjust the appearance function of placed blocks. That won’t do us any good without some blocks to edit though.

As such, head to wherever you’d like your staircase with your wooden hammer and platforms in hand. I’ll show you how to design a simple staircase here, but you can also mess with the direction and other parts of it to make it more visually complex.

Place your starting platform just above the ground. Then place another platform block one tile up and one tile to the side in the direction you want your stairs to go. Continue until you have a complete set of platforms where you want your staircase.

As fair as function is concerned, this can already serve as a basic set of stairs in Terraria if you’re happy to jump constantly to climb it, but we can do better than that.

You can now adjust your stairs with the hammer to give them a more typical staircase style look. If your blocks are set up next to each other precisely as I mentioned earlier, hitting each one once with a hammer should automatically connect them like this, giving you a nice staircase appearance.

As an added benefit, you no longer need to jump to climb the stairs. You can walk straight up these. You can also jump and hold down to fall through them as if they were not there, just like normal platforms.

If you’re making a boss arena or just a house, this is a useful technique to remember.
