Originally a light gun shooter game released in 1996, The House of the Dead Remake is now available on Nintendo Switch, consoles, and PC.

As this Sega classic is originally a light gun shooter game where players aim and shoot their targets using a gun-shaped controller, it’s interesting to know how you can control the game on the new platforms it has been released on.

Without the light gun, how will The House of the Dead Remake controls work?

With the old light gun setup, players simply had to aim the gun-shaped controller on the screen and shoot. As for reloading ammo, it could originally be done by firing outside the screen.

Now, in the absence of the gun-shaped controller, players will have to use their analog sticks and/or use the gyroscope in the controllers to move the aiming cursor around the screen.

On the other hand, as there is obviously no way you can fire outside the screen in the new platforms, there is now a button assigned for reloading. This means that it is possible for players to fire and reload simultaneously.

While this sounds quite efficient, it somehow takes away the thrilling pace that made the original game very engaging.

Moreover, in an official FAQ, Forever Entertainment has provided a lot of useful information about the game including its controls.

The game’s producer and publisher said:

“You may use both analog + buttons and gyro aiming. Combined controls are also available. Gyro works for a pair of Joy-Cons (+ grip) as well as with a single Joy-Con. Pro Controller works too. If you only own a Nintendo Switch Lite you will be able to use standard controls without gyro.

The game has numerous options for the gyro, such as – reset, aim assist (available for analog as well), sensitivity, revert X/Y axis, control mode.”

As for the PC version, players can aim and shoot using their mouse like in any other shooting game.

While The House of the Dead Remake is a delightfully faithful remake of the original, we can’t deny the fact that the lack of the original light gun controls makes it just a teeny bit less enjoyable.
